About this project
Hey there. I am Joe Summars and I made a documentary I am eager to promote.
In November 2009, my tiny little start up creative services company FLUXFAZE Creative Enterprises started off with a documentary project Harley and Annabelle - Living Legends in Erick, Oklahoma to tell the story of how an endearing (and somewhat scary) mom and pop pair of entrepreneurs independently transformed themselves from struggling, starving conventional retailers into astoundingly successful, unconventional (and still somewhat scary) entertainers.
Appearing as accidentally as they did suddenly and modestly on the Route 66 tourism scene in 1999, their brand of hospitality and entertainment evolved and blossomed into something unlike anything else that can be experienced along the Mother Road. Shying away from traditional tourist attraction business models involving admittance fees, foreign-made souvenir merchandising, dry, unmemorable "stand-and-stare" experiences, and heavily government-subsidized boredom for their visitors, Harley and Annabelle Russell mustered their formidable array of creative talents to transform themselves and the oldest brick building in town into an international nexus literally surging with "Insanity At Its Finest".
Charging no admittance fees, selling absolutely nothing, and accepting no government aid of any kind, The Mediocre Music Makers have attracted thousands of Route 66 travelers from around the world to their theater, The Sandhills Curiosity Shop, where they greet every visitor with a warm, very physical welcome, treat them to heartfelt hospitality, and wow them with a zany Mediocre Music Program for nothing more than the gratuities their visitors eagerly toss into their tip jars before they leave to continue their journeys.
Witnessing this transformation of Harley and Annabelle over a decade inspired me to make the documentary. Never giving up during their struggles prior to the transformation and never slowing down since to provide their visitors the best experience they can continues to drive me to share their story. And now that the documentary has been released, I am eager to get out and promote it.
The goal of the Insanity At Its Finest Tour is to augment exposure of the documentary, targeting venues in locations where people most likely to take an interest in the story of Harley and Annabelle's inspiring transformation will be this summer: travelers from around the world actually touring Route 66 and visiting its many attractions.
Funding for this project will allow me to provide free, informal screenings of the documentary at key locations along Route 66, starting in Chicago, Illinois and ending at the Santa Monica Pier in California. For the most part, funding will cover travel, lodging, mobile communications, and meal expenses with the remainder used to pay for screening venue space rental (where needed) and for production of backer rewards offered in this project. Nothing will be sold on this tour but every opportunity will be taken to tell interested parties where to find Harley and Annabelle and where the documentary is being offered for retail, wholesale, and digital download purchase. The documentary was self-funded and I have no debt load from its production. Eventually, after costs have been recovered from the making of this documentary, fifty percent of proceeds from its sales will go into Harley and Annabelle's tip jars. The other fifty percent will go towards making a follow-up documentary "Harley & Annabelle - Living Legends in Erick, Oklahoma (The Underground Version)" which might include stories, photos, and videos from some of the generous backers of this documentary screening tour project.
