About

A book in the spirit of Amazon Tribal Legends

As a fine artist living in Roraima, Brazil, I had the wonderful privilege to have contact with several local tribes like the Wapixanas and the Maku. My time there experiencing the richness of their storytelling tradition has since inspired my pursuits as an artist.

Zack and Mnazi's Curious Wish is my first foray into bringing the magical storytelling elements present in those legends into a children's book. The colors and characters of nature that are so aptly invoked in those tales come to life here in a story that is relevant to children and their need to understand how the world works.

Through this process of discovery,  the story focuses our attention to the the creatures in nature that children can often overlook when living in a modern world.

This is hopefully the first of many fine art children's books - I have over 30 stories written and a wealth of illustrations on the way!

The Story

Zack and Mnazi's Curious Wish is a story about a boy who spends his sunny days in the beaches of Florida and his rainy ones under the giant shade of his palm tree friend Mnazi. He doesn't realize just how wonderful his life already is, and when his birthday comes around, a powerful wish made with the best of intentions has the risk of changing the lives of the creatures who share this great place with him forever.

Why South Florida?

When designing this project, my original inspirations were the personal experiences I had volunteering at Pelican Harbor Seabird Station. The impact our urban environment had on the wonderful creatures that were rescued there made me realize that few of us thought about the consequences of our living habits in an ecosystem shared by other creatures.

In South Florida, this co-habitation with wildlife is striking with sea turtle nests at the beach, Ibis birds perusing the suburbs, and manatees drifting through the region's many canals. Not to mention the countless species that inhabit the Everglades that visit us more often than not.

I wanted to write a story that took these natural elements through the native storytelling tradition of the Amazon, to create a tale that would inspire children to think twice about how their actions might affect the creatures that live around them.

I believe that by being able to inspire awareness and empathy, we can inspire a generation of leaders capable of preserving the wonderful place they live in.

Research, Trials, Evaluations

During my initial writing process, I was volunteering and later working as an assistant teacher at an elementary school in Texas. By participating in class activities and helping teachers tell other stories I was able to study what captured students' attention and the kinds of questions they were interested in.

I finished the draft of Zack and Mnazi's Curious Wish (at that time called Two Suns and One Moon), and was lucky enough to be able to read the picture book for several classes.

The feedback was so wonderful that it really encouraged me to continue working on it. The great Teachers and staff I worked with gave me further invaluable advice into being able to make this story into truly a great story, including conducting further readings with elementary school classrooms.

My objective also became to include learning hooks into the story so that teachers could easily segue into introducing new vocabulary and new concepts to the class.

I have put this story through many trials and evaluations and now the final draft and illustrations are finished.

With Your Help
With the help of the wonderful community of educators, parents, and everyone interested in children's storytelling I hope to be able to publish this wonderful project so that it can be shared with the world.

The Kickstarter project will fund the printing of this book and also transforming it into a digital format for use with multimedia devices like tablets, computers, and e-readers.

This will hopefully be only the first of many projects with a focus on fine art and nature-inspired storytelling for children.

Risks and challenges

The illustrations and story are all done - with the goal in kickstarter met we will have the funds to self publish. The eBook is still very much a work in progress - while it will definitely be published, we are still working out how much interactivity and extra features we can pack under our budget/timeline.
