Stories on a String tells the tale of Jacina, a teenager who is dragged away from her Facebook-fuelled life in the Metropolis of Sao Paulo to visit her elderly grandmother in Belem, in the Amazon. Disheartened by Jacina’s lack of enthusiasm for her once-beloved stories, Grandma sends Jacina on a mission to visit the tribe where she was born. This turns out to be a life-affirming mission for Jacina, who, through a series of encounters with mythical creatures and illegal loggers, makes some illuminating discoveries...
Stories on a String is a theatre show for family audiences inspired by Brazilian folk tradition which includes music, puppetry and artwork. The show is based on literatura de cordel - literature on a string - a style of poetry from Northeast Brazil recited in markets, bringing stories to the masses. Poems were sold in small booklets on a string and illustrated with woodblock artwork.
Little Angel Theatre, London's premiere puppetry venue, have offered us their studio for two weeks in April to develop our piece. We will be looking to expand our work from a 20-minute scratch performance to an hour-long show during this time. When our show is ready, we will be seeking to tour it in venues throughout the UK.
We have received funding from Arts Council England to pay for the majority of costs, but are currently £1000 short. We need this money to be able to fully pay our artists, design & make puppets, and create a trailer which will be used to promote our tour.
With your help, Stories on a String can be kickstarted down the road to a UK tour! We are all very excited to be part of this project and will be exceedingly grateful for your contribution.
Risks and challenges
Luckily, there are very few risks at this stage in our project since we have already got much in place - our team, the rehearsal venue and core Arts Council funding. Our main challenge will be to see this project through in the long run. We really want to be able tour a full-length show in UK theatres, which we hope to do in Spring 2018. This of course depends on funding - and this Kickstarter campaign will ensure that we have money in the piggy bank for our tour!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
