Maybe some of this should go into the 'Bio' section but I think it is important to put it here.  I was born in 1960.  In 1971 my family unit fell apart and in 72 at the age of 12 I was working an adult job on a landscaping crew under the table to help support my Mom and 3 siblings.  I developed an 'attitude problem' and stopped turning in work at school.  In short order I discovered weed and was selling drugs at the age of 15.  I discovered downtown bars that didn't check ages and by sheer luck happened to become a regular at Jays Longhorn Saloon which was the Minneapolis equivalent of CBGBs.  Going to see Iggy Pop tour for his Lust For Life LP made me into a Punk and Seeing the original Ramones tour for Rocket To Russia confirmed it.  ( and how!!) I dropped out of school and spent the next 12 years hanging out at clubs, drinking, selling weed and working occasional odd jobs as a laborer or factory worker.  Sobering up at the age of 28 I had no idea what to do next but I remembered my lifelong love of comics and decided ( in my innocence! that I would fulfill my original childhood dream ( from before things went bad) of becoming a comic book artist.  I was 12 years out of practice with my drawing but I produced a comic anyway, the horribly drawn and mercifully out of print JACK OF NINES in 1989.  Losing my shirt on that, and marrying my girlfriend, I set out to practice 30 hours a week until my drawing was at a professional level.  A much better artist, but unable to find work, I produced my second comic BIG MONSTER FIGHT in 1995.  It lasted 2 issues and I lost my shirt again.  Undaunted, I drew on and began to find work with small press publishers most notably Conspiracy Comics who I helped launch by being their first artist.  Frustrated drawing stories that I thought were less than what I could write myself for almost no pay ( $20 a page and a share of profits that never happen was a typical small press deal ) I launched the MINNEAPOLIS FREE COMIC in 98 with the idea of distributing comics locally at free racks in grocery stores and bookstores and paying the freight with local ads like an alt. newspaper.  That ALMOST worked and so lasted 3 issues and I only lost half my shirt.  Then I was Hired by Fantagraphics to do X rated 'adult stories for the sex anthologies they were producing under their "Eros" imprint.  I did 16 five page stories and two full length 24 page comics; THE CRIMSON GASH VS HITLER and THE CRIMSON GASH VS CRIME.  I got a lot of good feedback and sales were OK but Fantagraphics was getting out of 'adult' underground business and scaling back their commitment to comic overall and the Eros line stopped buying new work and only reprints it's back catalog to this day.  Deciding to take another stab at the Adult market I hooked up with Demi The Demoness creator Steve Crompton who I knew from Fantagraphics and did a 48 page adult graphic novel THE CRIMSON GASH VS SATAN for his Carnal Comics imprint.  I still feel it was the best underground of the year but with the adult market drying up sales were weak.  Since then I have played around with a few ideas, did an issue worth of material for ROBOT JUNGLE GIRL which you can see online in hopes of finding a publisher for the title but failed to do so and dropped it.  In a funk, I started many stories without finishing them, started a web comic CTHULHU PUNK got discouraged with the style I was working in and dropped it.  For much of the last 2 years previous to starting this project I did little art and sank into a deep depression about the way my comics career had turned out.  It seemed like thousands of hours of work for nothing.  But giving up is overrated.  I found a new style, doing everything in pen outline like many of the European artists do, a new way of working and "I'm back BABY!"  PUNK ROCK COMICS  is the ultimate mash up of everything I've ever done in comics including some of the "Adult" characters in PG-13 versions.  This is an all ages comic, albeit one with sick humor and nonstop action.  My goal is simple- I want this to be the most psychotronic comic book ever produced.  It's about the end of the world.  EL HIJO DEL CTHULHU rises out of the ocean on page one and Leopard Girl, The Mayor, The Black Dwarf, The Enchanted Dagger, Speed Centaur, Robot Jungle Girl, The Radioactive Kid, Sheriff Judy, Summer Sky, Doc Delilah, Robo Gog, Kidgang and Sciencegang have to deal with it.  There will be more monsters and characters than that- I'm just listing everyone with a role or a cameo in the first issue.  I have 20 pages done --4 more pages and cover and I will be ready to print.  I am budgeting money for printing, shipping, setting up a website to serve as a platform for this project- which is ongoing- and doing some publicity and advertising.  As an experienced self publisher with 25 years on the fringes of this business I know that without ongoing advertising and publicity efforts you just wind up with a closet full of unsold books.  Won't you please find it in your heart to make a beat up old loser like me into a beat up old loser with cool comic?  I will make you very proud to be an early supporter and work my butt off produce new and even more crazy issues on a regular basis and build it into something you can point to with pride and say ; " I helped start that!"

Risks and challenges

Virtually none as I am a professional artist and the project is almost done. I have 20 pages finished which only leaves 4 pages and the cover. It's really only a few weeks work, and I should be done with my end by the time the 30 day window of backing the project is up. I am not promising the book until March just because (A) I want to hire out coloring the cover to an artist friend of mine and (B) I am allowing time for everything that could possibly go wrong to do so. And I figure that no one will complain if I get the book done early, which is likely! As for self publishing challenges, I have been down this road before- with no backers- many times and feel very confident in my ability to succeed with the help of all of you!

  2. Select this reward

Pledge $20 or more About $20

At the $20 level you will also receive a hot off the press signed copy of Punk Rock Comics # 1, PLUS signed copies of both issues of my long out of print alternative comic BIG MONSTER FIGHT- issues #0 and #1. Big Monster Fight was a satirical but action packed alternative genre comic very similar to what I want to do with Punk Rock Comics. Each issue featured a 15 page 'Kaiju' story in which Uber scientist vixen 'Doc Delilah' sent teenaged kids out to pilot giant plastic robot "Robo Gog" out to fight a different giant monster. Also an 8 page back up feature with a grown up buxotic 'Alice' battling monsters in Wonderland ( the Jabberwok and the Bandersnatch, respectively.) All stories are complete and the numbers I have left of these press runs are dwindling so I have to limit this to 200. Probably plenty, but you never know!

Those generous souls who can find their way to the $50 mark will receive all the comics mentioned above ( all 3 ) AND a signed copy of my 100 page squarebound book SANDEZ REY VS REALITY collecting two stories only distributed in the Twin Cities ( in Minneapolis Free Comic # 1 & # 3...) plus 52 pages of unpublished stories. I self published this book with a limited press run of 1,000 strictly to sell myself at conventions ( cover price $10 ) and it has never been wholesaled to any distributer or sold out of any shop except "The Source" in St. Paul Minnesota. Non stop psychotronica as Santa Claus battles the Space Pirate ( who stole the moon! ) , World War Wrestling settles global conflicts in the ring! Flat Girl and Lava Boy battle The Peoples Republic Army in Tibet, The Enchanted Dagger meets Incomprehensible Girl, Breezy Biggles meets Mr. Crime, Leopard Girl chases the Gingerbread Man, Cthulhu Rex rampages and much more! Well, maybe not much more...a little more anyways! It's a great book of fun reading and a true collectors item of some of my rarest stuff.
