About this project
What is THE OGRE'S FEATHERS?
We're making a 20-minute, updated version of a classic folk tale. The story unfolds in a contemporary setting that resembles New York. We're aiming to be true to the magic and mystery of the original tale by applying the visual vocabulary of silent movies.
And so this is a silent film, in black and white. There's music and sound effects, but when characters speak their words appear on title cards.
We intend to screen the piece in film festivals, and hope it will find a life beyond that.
What's the story?
A dying King can only be saved if he acquires one of the Ogre's feathers. No one will help, because the Ogre eats every human he sees. But a Young Man volunteers to journey to the Ogre's lair - where the Ogre's Wife provides unexpected assistance.
THE OGRE'S FEATHERS is a timeless tale about goodness in the face of selfishness and suffering.
The project has an exciting cast - performers from a wide range of backgrounds. The King is played by Samuel R. Delany, acclaimed novelist and essayist. The Young Man is played by Frank Harts, a Juilliard-trained actor who performs extensively on stage and screen. It's the first movie role for photographer Rachel Chandler, who plays the Ogre's wife, and for 13-year-old India Kotis, who plays the King's Nurse.
Other cast members include: Josh Hamilton, a magnificent stage and film actor whose credits range from a recent Obie-winning New York production of Three Sisters to the upcoming Clint Eastwood movie J. EDGAR; Tom Farrell, veteran of films directed by Nicholas Ray and Wim Wenders; Rome Neal, award-winning actor, jazz singer and artistic director of the Nuyorican Poet's Cafe; and Joel Schlemowitz, an extraordinary experimental filmmaker and teacher at Parsons the New School for Design.
Michael Almereyda is the writer/director. His films include TWISTER, ANOTHER GIRL ANOTHER PLANET, NADJA, HAMLET, and WILLIAM EGGLESTON IN THE REAL WORLD.
The producer is Blake Ashman-Kipervaser, who has worked on recent films such as THE LOTTERY, PRINCE OF BROADWAY, and 2012: TIME FOR CHANGE.
The shoot has been spread over so many months that there have been three cinematographers - all fantastic: Pablo Tapia-Pla, Ryan Samul, and Alan McIntyre Smith. Bara Jichova is the editor. She worked on Michael Almereyda's PARADISE, which had a week-long run at New York's Museum of Modern Art in 2010 and was nominated for an IFP Gotham Award.
And crucial assistance has been provided by Alice Garland, costume designer, Ola Maslik, production designer, and Mangusta Productions, generous provider of space, services and support.
How does Kickstarter work?
Kickstarter is a platform for supporting creative projects. In exchange for your contributions, we offer a variety of rewards, plus our profound gratitude. Funding is all-or-nothing, so we must raise our full $5,000 to move forward! If we don't make our goal, nobody will be charged, the movie will remain incomplete, and the Ogre will triumph.
Please check out the rewards listed on the right for contributions of all levels. We plan to complete editing by the end of the summer and send out DVDs in the fall.
Where will the funds go?
We've shot and edited 4/5th of the movie, but we need to shoot three more days. Funds will go toward fundamental production costs - camera rental, transportation and food for the cast and crew - plus post-production necessities, such as a sound mix. And noodles for Bara, the editor, who lives in Chinatown. Please help!
