Hi All! Here's an update...
Eg: We're hoping to add strings to a couple of songs, and we'd love to hire mix-engineer Greg Reely to mix some of the project and master all of it. This is a finishing touch process that can make the difference between good and great. The cost there would be an additional $6,000+. So if you'd still like to be part of this project, we can still use the support, but we do have enough to proceed with reasonable confidence. I'm very grateful and extremely touched by the support.
I’m looking for patrons to help me produce and launch my 18th CD of music. This one is called Pilgrimage and is unique in that it celebrates the 25 years that have passed since my first album, Comfort My People, was released in 1989.
To celebrate, we’re planning a four disc set to be released this fall 2014 with an accompanying book which includes, among other things, a reflective biographical essay and discography written by John Stackhouse Jr.
DISC 1. PILGRIMAGE: is a collection of all new songs I’ve been writing and gathering over the last year. It includes two new finger-style guitar instrumentals, a song I wrote for my wife of 32 years, and several new songs I’ve written with English poet Malcolm Guite. Produced by Murray Pulver / Dave Zeglinski and myself.
DISC 2. UNADORNED: is a collection of old songs, chosen by fans from my body of work, and re-recorded with just guitar and vocals so that you can hear the songs… unadorned. For this CD I flew to British Columbia and recorded it at Whitewater Studios under the direction of producer Roy Salmond.
DISC 3. GOOD COMPANY: is a collection of my songs recorded by friends and colleagues. This disc was secretly conceived and planned by friends Roy Salmond and Bob Bennett and I only learned of it recently. For a songwriter, the greatest honour is when other songwriters take up your songs and re-imagine them in a fresh version. I was deeply moved when I learned of these. Contributors include: Bob Bennett, Carolyn Arends, Jacob Moon, Glen Soderholm, Diana Pops, Don Amero, Harmony Through Harmony, Gayle Salmond, The Bros. Landreth, Mike Janzen, Ego Spank, Malcolm Guite and David Jennings.
DISC 4. LANDSCAPES: is a personal project of my manager/producer Dave Zeglinski. A few years ago he remixed several of my songs without vocals and used them as background music before concerts. To our surprise, many people asked about the availability of the recording as it allowed them to enter into the songs in a different way. This disc collects Dave’s favourite soundtracks we’ve recorded over the years and offers a series of Landscapes for contemplative listening.
You can imagine that a project of this scope is rather costly. I’ve already raised some of the funds needed, and of course I expect to risk some of my own resources. But I’m hoping to raise at least an additional $20,000 to help defer the costs (total budget estimation is $67,500). The money needed helps to pay the costs of recording, musicians, travel, design and packaging, and marketing.
What if we earn more than the minimum amount? If this campaign exceeds the minimum $20,000, the extra money will be used for promotion, touring and the development of future projects, which I already have percolating in the back of my mind.
Would you help?
Every bit matters. And we’ve tried to come up with fun and meaningful rewards for different levels of contribution.
We know from experience that folks are willing to help without promise of reward, but it’s still fun to get stuff you might not be able to get otherwise. My Signpost Music staff and I enjoyed conceiving of rewards appropriate to each level of contribution we thought you might like:
$20 – You will receive a personalized thank you card, and a 16-song CD called Treasures from the Vault that contains archival songs (many never before released) from my past, including the first song I ever wrote and recorded when I was 12 years old, and songs from various bands I was a part of over the years.
$50 – You will receive a t-shirt of your choice with the emblem of my new album, Pilgrimage, printed on the front. (You’ll also receive the card and archival CD from the first level contribution.) Following the campaign, you will be contacted for style and size - see detail below.
$100 – You will receive a signed copy of the new multi-disc Pilgrimage project. (You’ll also receive the card, archival CD, and t-shirt from the previous contribution levels.)
$300 – You will receive an autographed, handsome 48 page book of scenic photography containing photos from the many trips I’ve taken around the world: Ethiopia, Egypt, Sinai, Israel, Bangladesh, India, etc. (You’ll also receive the card, archival CD, t-shirt, and autographed Pilgrimage project from the previous contribution levels.)
$500 – You will receive a lovely pair of hand-crafted porcelain mugs bearing the Pilgrimage emblem. The mugs are dishwasher safe and a generous size for your coffee or tea. (You’ll also receive the card, archival CD, t-shirt, autographed Pilgrimage project, and the photography book from the previous contribution levels.)
$1000 – You will receive a complete box-set of all 17 of my previous CDs. (You’ll also receive the card, archival CD, t-shirt, autographed Pilgrimage project, photography book and artisanal mugs from the previous contribution levels.)
$3000 – You will receive gorgeous his and hers art-jewelry pieces created by Diana Pops uniquely for this campaign, bearing the images of two traditional symbols of pilgrimage: the scalloped shell (pendant) traditionally used to scoop water from streams along your journey; and the dagger (bookmark), traditionally a symbol of courage, strength and hope which was used for various practical purposes including to “ward off danger.” (You’ll also receive the card, archival CD, t-shirt, autographed Pilgrimage project, photography book, artisanal mugs, and career box-set from the previous contribution levels.)
$5000 – I will come to your home (at my expense) and perform a house concert for you and your friends on a date to be determined according to my existing travel schedule. (You’ll also receive the card, archival CD, t-shirt, autographed Pilgrimage project, photography book, artisanal mugs, career box-set, and the his and hers art-jewelry pieces from the previous contribution levels.)
Thank you for taking the time to consider my request for support. My work has always been sustained by the wider community, and I’m ever grateful that you enable me to “encourage Christian faith and thoughtful living through artful word and song.”
Risks and challenges
1) TAX RECEIPTS: There are no tax receipts given for Kickstarter projects. If you prefer not to receive any of the above rewards, but would like to make a tax receiptable donation to Steve Bell through IncarNATION Ministries, visit http://stevebell.com/support/.
2) RISKS AND CHALLENGES: Steve’s Pilgrimage project is well underway and completion is estimated for release mid-September. If the amount that we are seeking is not obtained, we will pursue alternate fundraising options.
3) STRETCH-FUND GOALS: If this project exceeds the “ask” of $20,000, the funds will go toward additional promotion, touring, and future projects.
4) YOUR PLEDGE: Your credit card will not be charged until the Kickstarter project is successfully funded.
5) YOUR REWARDS: After the Kickstarter project is over, you will be contacted regarding shipping, t-shirt sizes, etc. Once Signpost Music has received shipment of the Pilgrimage project in mid-September, delivery of the rewards will begin. Delivery dates may vary. (Please note, all photos are close representations; actual products may vary slightly.)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
