Our Colour Story

In 2008, we designed a crowd sourcing experiment to collect a large number of multilingual colour names with their corresponding colour ranges to facilitate colour communication within and across languages. Over the past eight years, we gathered responses from thousands of participants in 21 languages. We presented our findings to the public and created an online application available at colournaming.com that allows every user of the Internet to explore the beauty of colour languages.

But the technology is moving fast and we need now your support to upgrade our online experiment to run on all new devises, minimize security threats and maintain our online presence free without advertisements.

About the Colours of Babel

The Colours of Babel is designed to reveal the misunderstanding involved in colour language. The colours are carefully selected by analysing the responses from the online experiment to provide a staircase game experience with easy to difficult to name colour cards.

Each package contains two sets of 26 poker sized colour cards and instructions. This is the fourth round of prototypes that we have played extensively in workshops, living rooms, museums, parks and by the beach.

Who is the game for?

The Colours of Babel is a valuable colour naming/matching game for educational learning, design businesses and fun! The game can also function as an excellent icebreaker as it challenges recipient design thinking, evokes communicative strategies and produces many laughs.

This project wouldn’t be possible without the advice and support of many more devoted academics and professionals with background in computer science, psychology, engineering, art & design, event organisation, programming, mathematics, journalism, translations, anthropology, sociology, marketing, architecture and video editing among others. Thank you

Colour brings people together and we want to thank you for backing our campaign. We want also to thank the Department of Computer Science, University College London for hosting our research, the Colour Reference Library of Royal College of Arts for the permission to shoot at their premises, the press for covering our research, all contributors of the colour naming study and all participants of the online colour naming experiment. Music by: www.bensound.com.

Risks and challenges

The risks and challenges are minimal for the rewards. We have an established relationship with manufacturers to ensure the quality of the postcards, fine art prints and playing cards. There are a few final design touches to optimize the Colours of Babel for the Kickstarter community but after a year of testing the final round of prototypes we feel confident that we can deliver an exceptional card game on time.

Redeveloping a custom online experiment to run on all devices for the next years is more challenging but with our experience and your support we will be able to bring up to date our existing platform without delays.
