We're a skincare company inspired by a little yellow root that works magic on your skin. It's our mission to help girls be girls.
Now, we're expanding our product range—and need YOUR help!
My fiancé Jamil and I have always had a knack for doing things ourselves. Living in Canada, my skin would go through many adventures due to the wildly varying climate—from extremely humid and sweaty summers to dry and freezing winters. Never one to use a lot of makeup, I was tired of using coverup and concealer that only made my skin worse.
Jamil suggested using turmeric since his mom always suggested it for skincare. It was also used in various weddings he attended in Bangladesh. We spent weeks formulating a scrub with simple ingredients and we finally found something perfect. YLLO was born. Our goal was always to highlight turmeric as a wonderful skincare product because of its amazing natural properties.
We started selling our original face scrub using Instagram and within a few months things kinda blew up. We got rave reviews from customers and we were featured in Allure, Brit+Co, GQ, Buzzfeed, and Girlboss, and even started selling on shelves in Anthropologie throughout North America.
We're now looking to expand our line with three new, amazing turmeric-based skincare products—and we need YOUR help!
YLLO is a skincare company inspired by a powerful, fragrant, little yellow root known as turmeric. Our products focus on beauty that’s cruelty-free, vegan, and naturally-derived. Our mission is to help girls be girls by donating 10% of our profits towards charities helping end child marriage.
Most people think of turmeric and immediately curry comes to mind. But there’s so much more to turmeric than making your food yellow. It's a superfood with countless antibacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-inflammatory properties that work wonders for your body when consumed, but also when used topically. In fact, turmeric has been used for centuries in Indian beauty routines—most commonly during weddings.
In many South Asian cultures, the Haldi ceremony is performed before a wedding. Turmeric makes up the majority of this vibrant yellow paste, which is applied to the bride and groom's bodies. Haldi is believed to ward off evil spirits, promise a life of prosperity, and give the couple a beautiful glow on their wedding day. We think this tradition is beautiful and should be celebrated.
Unfortunately, there's a horrible truth that isn’t often talked about. In India alone, it is estimated that 47% of girls are married before their 18th birthday. We don't want something as amazing as the Haldi ceremony to be associated with child marriage. We've made it our mission to help empower girls around the world and prevent future child brides. We also collect their stories in the hope to facilitate awareness and change.
How Can Turmeric Help Me?
Turmeric is a super-spice for your skin. It contains antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties that help fight acne, correct oily skin, even out skin tone, reduce redness, fade acne scarring, reduce signs of aging, lighten facial hair growth, and more.
As a supporter, you get exclusive, first access to our three new products: a turmeric face mask, turmeric body scrub, and turmeric face elixir.
Our new turmeric face mask is formulated specifically with sensitive skin in mind. As soon as it's applied, you'll feel a wonderful cooling sensation that will leave your face fresh, revitalized and moisturized.
Our face mask contains white kaolin clay, which draws out impurities from your pores, and coconut flour that is high in vitamin C, which is great for tightening your skin's elasticity and preventing sagging. Our argan oil contains many essential fatty acids which, along with lavender oil, are great for scar treatment, fading fine lines, and reducing redness. Our vanilla oil protects your face against sun damage and is a powerful antibacterial that cleanses your skin.
Our new turmeric body scrub features arrowroot powder that helps draw out oil and dry out blemishes. The presence of epsom salts acts as a great cleanser and helps get rid of dry, flakey dead skin. The salts themselves are also a great relaxant for your muscles.
Our body scrub also contains grape seed oil to help restore collagen and tighten your skin, while sweet orange oil gives off an amazing aroma and increases your skin’s ability to absorb vitamin C. This makes it great for promoting anti-aging benefits. Our turmeric helps fight body acne and even out skin tone, while fading and decreasing the thickness of body hair growth.
Our new turmeric face elixir contains oils like pomegranate and turmeric, which fend off free radicals and have really strong anti-inflammatory properties. It's a great follow-up treatment after using our original face scrub or face mask to keep your skin hydrated and nourished overnight or throughout the day.
Our face elixir also contains grapefruit oil—this fragrant oil smells amazing and helps prevent acne due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Our frankincense oil works to protect your skin cells, meaning it can help reduce the look of pores and help prevent acne and wrinkles. Our carrier base, jojoba oil, keeps your skin hydrated and fresh.
YLLO is an indie skincare brand that was bootstrapped from the ground up. We’d like to continue operating this way as it gives us the freedom to experiment and grow organically without pressure to compromise who we are. We're asking for $10,000 CAD so we can continue to spread our love for turmeric while helping end child marriage.
Where Will The Money Go?
The funds raised on Kickstarter will be used to:
- Purchase packaging
- Pay for manufacturing labour
- Cover trademarking fees
- Attend industry-leading tradeshows
With the expansion of our line, we are hoping to get our new products in the hands of retail buyers across North America. To do this, we need to stay top of mind at industry leading events. Unfortunately, costs to attend these events can be quite high (especially since many are held in NYC, meaning we have extra travel costs with us being based in Toronto, Canada).
We’ve already formulated our recipes and sourced the ingredients for our new products, which means we’re ready to start manufacturing once the Kickstarter funds are received. Manufacturing takes about 4-6 weeks, so you can expect to receive all your products in time for the holiday season.
- SEPT 12: Kickstarter campaign launches
- OCT 12: Kickstarter campaign ends
- MID-OCT: Manufacturing begins
- MID-NOV: Orders are shipped out
- END NOV: Shipments are delivered
After doing a lot of research on turmeric and the haldi ceremony, we kept running into child marriage stats, fact sheets, and articles. These stats were disturbing and made us have some serious questions, especially about Jamil’s mother who doesn’t talk much about her past.
After probing and pleading with her, Jamil found out that his mother was arranged to be married at 16— and even more shockingly, one of his grandmothers was married off at just 9 years old. Sadly, this practice is not uncommon in many third world countries. Jamil's homeland, Bangladesh, has one of the highest rates of child marriage, where 50% of brides are under 18 and 1 in 3 girls are married before they turn 15 years old.
We donate 10% of our profits to help end child marriage. This cause is one that's very close to home for us. We hope to raise awareness about this not often talked about issue. These girls don’t need much to have better lives. It starts with education—for us, them, their families, their communities, and their governments.
YLLO was founded by Jazmine Fenton and Jamil Bhuya. Prone to oily skin, breakouts, redness, and a host of other skin problems, Jaz had trouble justifying using many products due to their intimidating ingredient lists. Growing up in a Bengali household, Jamil's childhood was filled with natural remedies. The most common ingredient his mother, Nasrin, would always recommend as a potent solution was none other than YLLO's superstar ingredient: turmeric.
Jamil's first experience with turmeric-based skincare was when, at the age of 8, he was visiting Bangladesh to attend his cousin’s wedding. His most fond memory was the gaye holud (meaning turmeric on the body), where his entire family rubbed a homemade turmeric paste on the bride and groom. What made it so memorable was after the bride and groom were done being covered by turmeric paste, everyone started rubbing it all over each other. It was like a turmeric food-fight, with people of all ages frantically running around, laughing with joy.
For years, Jaz suffered from recurring skin problems—meaning she’s tried just about everything out there. It became hard to justify using brand name products full of mystery ingredients. In the end, it felt like most of these products focused on hiding problems rather than healing them. As someone who loves living as natural as possible, she wanted a product she could understand, with fast results. After hearing about turmeric's amazing benefits, YLLO’s formula was born—a simple, vegan product that just works, made with ingredients you can find in your kitchen.
To cap it all off, after 10 years of dating, they're finally engaged! *happy dance*
