The idea for The Pigeon Hole is simple; to create a small but beautifully designed cafe that doubles as a second-hand furniture shop within the heart of south London's Camberwell.
In essence it is interactive shopping. Everything you see inside – from the tables and chairs, to the artwork on the walls – is for sale, whilst the cafe will provide customers with high quality, healthy produce, sticking to simple recipes with an aim to excite the taste buds!
Your money will be used to fund the following:
- To fit out the kitchen providing The Pigeon Hole with the necessary equipment to cook our soups (including our very special Bloody Mary Soup), our outstanding, locally sourced 'proper' hot chocolate from The Melange, and of course our fabulous assortment of chutneys and jams!
- To purchase a lovely vintage (second hand) coffee machine to help make the best coffee money can buy! (Quality coffee provided by local coffee roastery Volcano Coffee)
- To buy the raw materials to transform and decorate the shop. We're aiming to create a space that not only makes a relaxing environment to eat and drink, but also one that inspires and stands out as an excellent piece of spacial design.
- To gather the first of many instalments of second hand furniture, that will become the heart of the cafe's design.
As the business evolves The Pigeon Hole hopes to gain a late license and sell alcoholic beverages in the evenings from Thursday-Saturday. The café will become a cosy space to have a quiet drink, sourcing unusual wines, beers and spirits that encourage a sense of enquiry and new discoveries.
This will extend to our evening tapas where we will provide free food tasters to accompany your alcoholic beverage where food combinations will be more playful, we can gather your opinions and you can help shape our menu.
We believe breakfast is the best meal of the day, and so on weekends we want to make the most of our mornings by serving hot breakfasts and brunch, again keeping to simple favourites, sometimes adding our own twist like our bacon and Pigeon Hole Marmalade sandwich!
On the furniture side of the business, from car boots, to antique markets, to the side of the street, The Pigeon Hole wants to find those discarded treasures, clean them up and show them off in all their beauty. The cafe will be an interactive showroom of furniture and objects, celebrating the nostalgia of the old whilst showcasing the timelessness of design, and it's place within a contemporary setting.
Whilst it is an individual enterprise, The Pigeon Hole aims to build strong relationships with Camberwell and the local businesses surrounding it, sourcing our coffee, tea and baked goods from top quality local suppliers, artwork from local artists, and working with the local community to build an integral part of Camberwell life.
It is incredibly important to us that The Pigeon Hole is not only a shop, but also provides a service to Camberwell. As the company grows, we hope to offer work experience and internships to the young people in education at Y.E.S.S, a local charity offering alternative education to disadvantaged young people in the community, providing them with the chance to gain new skills and increase their employability.
So far we have found the ideal property but in order to proceed we need your pledges to help raise the capital. The shop is in a prime position in central Camberwell but will need a lot of work to bring it up to the Pigeon's standard.
However in the mean time, to provide the community with a taster of what's to come we have been running a small Saturday morning market stall on Camberwell Green. We will be there this Saturday 22nd June selling our chutneys, jams and hampers so come down and say hi! Watch out on our Facebook and Twitter feeds for more info.
Risks and challenges
A big challenge for the The Pigeon Hole is maintaining a strong and continually developing relationship with the local community whilst running a busy cafe. However by ensuring this is an integral part of business from the start will hopefully ensure this remains a focus.
There are existing cafes in Camberwell but we want to make sure we stand out in the crowd. By combining a strongly designed and inviting environment with unique yet simple produce, we are hoping to offer something that Camberwell hasn't seen before.
However, the main risk is that we are both taking a huge career and lifestyle change to pursue our dream. We hope with our combined experience, passion and drive we can make a success of The Pigeon Hole. It's now or never!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
