About this project
Welcome to the Kickstarter for The Silence, an ongoing science fiction comic book epic!
My purpose in creating The Silence is to make comic books that are beautiful, sophisticated, and entertaining. I hope readers will not only enjoy The Silence as a comic book story, but also engage with it as a serious work of literature. I approach each panel as a singular piece of art that fits into the whole of the story and arrange every detail in attempt to create something beautiful. Readers are invited into a sophisticated, multi-layered story as they follow characters who wrestle with personal issues and philosophical questions and encounter environments bounded by distinct perspectives and worldviews. Altogether, The Silence is an action-packed, immersive story that readers will enjoy looking at as much as they think about.
The GoalMy goal of this Kickstarter is to raise money to fund the initial print run of the first issue of The Silence. I have set the goal for $2000 to cover printing approximately 1000-1500 copies of the first book and shipping costs for rewards. Any funds raised above the initial goal will go to printing more copies of the first book. I will be selling these copies at conventions, promotional events, and comic book shops over the next year as I produce the next book in the series.
The chart above provides a visual breakdown of the reward tiers.

I call The Silence a space symphony. The overarching story is arranged according to the structure and themes of a classical symphony. The story follows the journey of 4 main characters: Naomi, a blind, dying heroine; Lazarus, a disabled hero unable to use his superhuman strength; and The Guards, two artificial intelligence robots who become self-aware and turn against government control to protect Naomi and Lazarus. The story is set in the future and takes place in a nearby galaxy called The Prolegomenon System. The story begins on the planet Issachar as Naomi and Lazarus search for Dr Polaris—the man responsible for treating Naomi's blindness and its subsequent fatal side effects. When a mysterious spaceship crash lands in the city, Naomi, Lazarus, and Dr Polaris learn of an approaching fleet of spaceships looking to commit genocide. Naomi and Lazarus launch into space to confirm the report but what they find leads them into an ongoing search for answers: Who are the Guards? Where did the spaceships come from? Why is everyone at war? What is The Hierarchy? Who is the Face? What can they do to save their planet from genocide? As they travel to each planet of the Prolegomenon System, they soon find out everything they lived for and knew was a lie.
The Theme and Setting
This series is called The Silence because Naomi and Lazarus cannot find answers to their questions—they are faced with an inexplicable silence. As they are led from one dead end to the next, they begin hearing prophecies about a mysterious character called The Face whose sacrificial act of love will provide the answers they have been looking for. Their search takes them to each planet of the Prolegomenon System. Prolegomenon means "a preliminary discussion." Prolegomenon is the initial intellectual steps we take when engaging in philosophy or theology. I intentionally called the planetary setting of The Silence the Prolegomenon System because as the characters travel throughout the planets, they are engaged in a kind of 'preliminary discussion' that prepares them to hear, accept, and believe the prophecies concerning the Face. The 12 planets of the Prolegomenon System are named after each of the 12 tribes of Israel found in the Old Testament of the Bible. The societies of each planet take on the characteristics and descriptions outlined in the blessing given to the 12 sons of Israel in Genesis 49. These descriptions also correspond to the major philosophies of history so that as the characters visit each planet and interact with the peoples the reader is engaged in evaluating the legitimacy of the major historical worldviews brought to their logical conclusions.
About the Creator
I have been drawing as long as I can remember. I was introduced to comic books as a young boy when my uncle gave me an old G.I. Joe comic as a birthday present. I was immediately fascinated with the art and form of comic book storytelling. My mom soon gave me the book "How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way." I devoured its contents and spent countless hours working through each chapter. After I graduated high school in 1994, I was accepted to study at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I majored in Communication and Design with an illustration emphasis. I graduated from OCAD in 1998.
In 1996, my dad died. This event radically affected my life. Up to that point in my life, I was not a religious person, but I began wrestling with many profound questions about belief, God, and philosophy. I began to see a direct connection between our spiritual and philosophical beliefs and everything else about who we are and what we do. These issues directly affected who I was as a person, especially how I approached art. In 2000, I became a Christian and soon after entered seminary to formally study the relationship between spirituality and culture. In 2012, I completed the Master of Divinity degree. Currently, I am pursuing a PhD in theology and philosophy.
My long-term goal is to write, draw, and promote The Silence until it becomes a successful science fiction comic book empire.
Risks and challenges
Rewards are projected to be fulfilled by the beginning of June 2016.
The Silence #1 will be completed by the end of the Kickstarter campaign in March. Once the funds are collected, the book will be sent to the printer. It will take approximately one month to receive the books from the printer. The goal is to have the books ready by the first week in May. Then, over the next several weeks, the rewards will be sent out.
I intend on fulfilling the rewards as fast as possible but sometimes things do not go as planned. I am married with 4 kids, work a full-time job, and am pursuing a PhD. Producing comic books is a passion I pursue in whatever free time I can squeeze out of an already hectic schedule. I will be in consistent contact with my backers through email and social media to provide updates about the Kickstarter campaign and the fulfillment of rewards.
