About this project
From the Ashes is the expansion to Ember: the Magical Card Game, and sees a host of new additions, including new creatures, brand new Tutors, magical artifacts, and the powerful elemental god cards. From the Ashes focuses on the endgame and player interaction to supercharge Ember into a tense and exciting game of creature conjuring.

Ember is a fast-paced fantasy filler game with elements of creature collection and take that! It hides a deceptively strategic depth under its gorgeous art and simple gameplay. It's a game of strategy, of acting and reacting to the creatures your enemies' Conjure; it's a game of memory, of face up and face down cards, and trying to keep a track of which player controls which cards as you prepare for the final endgame. While it has a luck of the draw factor, the variations of card effect mean it is always possible to turn things around and there are many many routes to victory. Ember has many different variations of play available which will suit almost all play styles.
District 31: With over 20 years' experience in publishing - and having released one of the fastest fulfilled campaigns in Kickstarter history earlier this year (13 weeks from campaign end to shipping) - we wanted to bring you the complete Ember, giving you even more variety and more ways to win with From the Ashes.
The new creature cards focus on Ember's endgame, on new strategies, and lower VP creatures.
During Ember’s hundreds of playtests, the playtesters consistently said they most enjoyed:
- That Ember is an intro game that can be learned by all ages in just a few minutes.
- Multiple ways to play: Ember has a variety of different ways to play based on your play-style. Casual Play, Hardcore, or even Battle Mode.
- A simple, yet surprisingly strategic game.
- The beautiful and highly evocative art.
- That you can mix and match cards to suit your strategy (don’t want an end game? Fine, just take out those cards. Hate the Take That element? No problem, just remove those cards, too. Ember is designed to be enjoyed in multiple ways with a variety of different rules to appeal to every gamer type.
- The often tense and tactical endgame (where anything can change).
Seal of Approval: Over the Saturday and Sunday of UK Games Expo 2016, almost 97% of participants who played a demo game of Ember went on to purchase a copy - that speaks volumes about the quality and how much fun Ember is - and From the Ashes looks even better!
Nearly half the new cards in From the Ashes are made up of new card types.
Elemental Dragon Gods: the ancient elemental gods are beings of great power. Made up of Bahamut (the god of fire) and Kraken (the god of water) and Tarrasque (the god of earth). They are dragons made up of three separate parts. Collect all three (before your opponents) and gain a Legendary ability which will allow you to crush your enemies.
And the mysterious Kraken, which has powers to revitalise other creatures as well as being able to strip creatures of their abilities.
Tarrasque has great powers to crush your enemies.
Tutors: are the teachers tutors at Alastor's Academy who wield great power. Each Tutor has a unique power that can influence the game to your advantage, along with a Quest that gives you crucial endgame bonuses.
Artifacts: are magical items of great power that are the first cards in the game with two or more abilities. The basic abilities of an artifact will help you on a turn-by-turn basis, and the secondary effect comes into play when you Conjure a VP 5 or higher creature, but if you need a boost of power, use their Arcane ability, but doing so will exhaust the item, flipping it in the process and losing all of its powers for the rest of the game.
All the finished cards will have a wide variety of unique backgrounds. Cards here are purely for illustration purposes only.
Reprint of Wizard Cards: In addition to all of the above, every backer will also get the four x 6 cards which had a slight printing issue which meant some players struggled to tell which element they were. As you can see, there are no issues here.
We literally cannot improve upon the quality of the game components, so all our Stretch Goals are focused on bringing you new and exciting cards to add ever more value to the game.

Long-time publishers with decades of experience: we released and delivered Ember: the Magical Card Game to customers within just 13 weeks (and one day) from the end of the campaign – that has got to be a record. We place an emphasis on quality over everything else with superlative art and fun games. They may not be the most serious, but they are darn pretty to look at.
That's it, there IS no more. Go away and pledge now. THANKS :)
Risks and challenges
We already have all our contracts in place. The art is 99% completed at the start of the campaign and we go to print in November / December 2016.
We have already put all the cards in the pre-press format and baring any playtest comments, have surprisingly very little to do to send this expansion to print.
With only a six weeks turnaround to reach our offices, we expect our copies of From the Ashes mid January 2016 well in time for Valentine's Day.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
