The Current, a 40 minute inspirational documentary, narrated by Jean-Michel Cousteau, tells the story of six individuals from all walks of life that face incredible obstacles and find the inspiration to become real heroes. Through water sports, each has ultimately discovered or rediscovered the freedom of movement. Trevor Rabin from Yes will compose an original music score and we intend to feature music (pending finalization of clearances) from Crosby, Stills and Nash, Dave Matthews Band, Sting, The Beach Boys and Death Cab For Cutie.
The Current is the second in a series of films and starts where the first film, The Movement, left off with paralyzed executive, Rick Finkelstein, now facing the challenge of learning to scuba dive for the first time. Once again Rick will be surrounded by a group of distinguished athletes who have so significantly overcome their challenges proving that they are truly heroes.
In this film, we will get to know these heroes and their stories through breathtaking cinematography and inspirational music featuring scuba diving, ocean kayaking, surfing, free diving, as well as, swimming with whales and dolphins. After watching this film you will want to experience the same freedom and will have a newfound respect for the healing power of the ocean. Your pledge today will help create this inspirational film that will help change the lives of able body and disabled individuals alike. Without Kickstarter.com funding, we WILL NOT be able to document these amazing stories of individuals as they experience new freedom by overcoming their challenges.
WHO’S IN THE FILM?
The Current features famed underwater explorer and environmentalist, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Bethany Hamilton of Soul Surfer, US Paralympian Mallory Weggemann, NCAA wrestling champion, Anthony Robles, US Olympic Swimmer, Missy Franklin, World Surfing Champion, Taylor Knox and first time disabled divers, Rick Finkelstein from The Movement and wounded American veteran Jesse Murphree. Together they personify true inspiration, perseverance and hope for all people that struggle with a disability.
Five gold medals, one bronze medal, two ESPY awards, a purple heart, and several decades of ocean conservation and education are only a few of the bench marks that will be featured by this amazing cast of individuals.
GOAL FOR THE FILM
We will create a powerful film that tells the story of the healing powers of the ocean and the growth of adaptive sports. It will be a film with a universal message of hope and self-belief, taking place in the ocean but carrying over into all facets of life.
Unlike most independent films and Kickstarter projects, we have a significant distribution program in place that was developed from our extensive distribution experience ensuring that millions of people will see The Current, due to its national theatrical tour, broadcast and cable network airings, film festivals and through its DVD and video on demand distribution.
Unfortunately, even with substantial distribution like this, independent documentary films like The Current do not generate significant revenue from its distribution. That's why we need your support to pay for the production of the film. Only through your generous support of our Kickstarter campaign can we make this high-quality inspirational film, The Current, about these amazing heroes.
Kickstarter is the largest crowd-funding platform for creative projects in the world. Every month tens of thousands of amazing people pledge millions of dollars to projects from the worlds of music, art, film, technology, design, food, and other creative fields. Every Kickstarter project must be fully funded before its time expires. This campaign gives supporters the unique experience to help fund a project that can have a profound effect on how we view individuals with physical disabilities. Take advantage of our amazing supporter incentives while supporting the production of a film that features an extraordinary cast connecting physically and spiritually to the healing powers of the ocean.
WHAT HAPPENS IF WE DON’T REACH OUR GOAL?
If The Current doesn’t raise its goal, we don't collect any of the pledges. Donors pledge the amounts, but don't actually pay until the goal is reached and the funding deadline has passed. We want to avoid this so please spread the word about this amazing film. Every pledge helps!
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE MEET OUR GOAL?
When we meet our goal we will start the production as quickly as possible and we’ll have a finished film with the highest production quality possible within 12 months. The directors and film crew will use their 30 years of making award-winning films to produce an amazing and inspirational film. Our campaign isn’t a project that is commercially financially viable and can only happen with the support of individuals like yourself from the Kickstarter community. The funds we receive from Kickstarter.com and supporters like you will be used for:
- Production development
- On location shooting
- Talent and license fees
- Post production
- Production personnel
- Finishing picture elements like color correction
- On-line editing and mastering
- General overhead
- Film festivals entry fees
- Marketing, public relations and advertising

The directors are continuing with the same creative inspiration to create compelling films that feature exotic travel locations, world-class athletes, and compelling personal stories.
Their films are a natural continuation of the endearing story telling featured in the Warren Miller films. Miller and Speek are excited and motivated about connecting with the Kickstarter community to support the production of this incredible film, The Current.
WHAT WILL THE CURRENT DO?
The Current is an adaptive sports film that seeks to inspire the world about how individuals of every disability are taking advantage of the freedom they can still achieve through sports. The Current’s team has the ability to create award-winning films that can change a life today but not without your support.
The director’s previous film, The Movement, was narrated by Robert Redford and Warren Miller and focused on disabled skiers including Mike May and Chris Waddell with music by the Foo Fighters and U2. The spirit of The Movement will continue in The Current. It will feature a blend of world-class athletes, celebrities, exotic locations and personal stories. Estimated to reach millions of viewers through its national theatrical tour, television airings, film festivals (including Sundance) and DVD distribution, you can play a major roll in the creation of this film by pledging today and taking advantage of our unique incentives.
Risks and challenges
The challenges that will be experienced during the production of this film do not compare to the amazing challenges that will be overcome by the athletes featured in this film. Although, attracting a cast of celebrities like Bethany Hamilton, Jean-Michel Cousteau, Missy Franklin, Taylor Knox, Anthony Robles and others to commit their time and likeness to The Current is one challenge that has already taken many months. In addition, prior to production, each of the characters will need to commit several hours to get PADI certified in order to scuba dive at each location. That said, coordinating the schedules of this extraordinary cast, who are all donating their time, and getting everyone to these exotic locations will be one of our biggest challenges.
Shooting under water also brings many new challenges to the film making process including the need for specialized cameras and under water equipment. After we get to the production locations, we will be at the mercy of Mother Nature for weather as well as finding and filming wild dolphins and whales to dive with.
Once principal photography is complete, our production team will be working for many months editing, script writing, acquiring music, creating sound effects and graphics.
In our rewards program we are asking for direct feedback from the Kickstarter community during post production via a digital download of a work in progress with an opportunity to email comments and ideas to the producers and crew. This direct feedback will be valuable information before finalizing The Current and will greatly help us overcome the challenges associated with making a truly compelling film.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
