Sometimes artists draw something just because it looks cool. Sometimes we smear paint on a canvas until it looks right. And sometimes we try to incorporate a message into a work that offers a new perspective.
Last summer I started tackling a philosophical problem. What is the deal with love? I felt like there were a couple problems with the idea of love in society. For example:
- When we talk about love, too often we're just talking about romance. Romance is all well and good, but it's just one kind of love.
- When love is promoted as a compassionate quality towards others, too often the focus is on women. You've seen the decorations with pink hearts and flowery script. Maybe it's because anthropologically speaking women are the nurturers and caregivers and men are the hunters and gatherers. If times have changed, why hasn't how we think about love?
- Love is conveyed as a weakness. It's true you have to let your guard down a little to let love in and share it with others, but maybe the willingness to let your guard down is a different kind of strength.
So after I considered these obstacles I started making a list of things a person might do out of love that we either take for granted or don't think of in terms of acting out of love. That list resulted in the Love Poem which I've incorporated into visual works of art.
I want to paint and play music on the moon while writing the great American novel in my spare time! But I'd settle for a space station in a low Earth orbit.
Successful funding of this campaign won't generate enough funds to launch me into space, but it will get me a few steps closer to realizing my dream of making art full-time. It will allow me to get these silkscreen prints made and into your hands.
At the same time I hope the message in this series of works will help foster a spirt of goodwill. We all need that reminder from time to time that life ain't so bad and the world can be a better place if we all put our best foot forward.
The available rewards are the very things I'm trying to get printed with this campaign, so in a sense this is much like a pre-order. The following stickers and prints will be offered separately and in various bundles. All rewards feature exclusive updates for backers and FREE SHIPPING IN THE US. Read more about them below and select one from the right side of your screen.
$6: Opens Doors/Fights No Wars Stickers - 4 pack
These stickers will measure 4 x 3 inches and stick to lots of surfaces, like bathroom stalls and fire hydrants. Designed for use on approved surfaces only! (wink) They feature this really cool looking tank, but also a stark reminder that war is bad, dig? These words come from second verse of the Love Poem.
$30: The UFO Poster + 2 Stickers
Early Bird Option: $25. Limited Supplies!
This poster illustrates the first verse of the Love Poem. It will be printed by hand using a silkscreening process on an off white paper using two inks and measure 18 x 24 inches, a very common size with a wide variety of frames available from any number of stores.
Done up in the style of a comic book page, this print would look great in a kid's room. Or maybe you're just a kid at heart, in which case you can hang it wherever you like. The truth is out there, Scully.
The UFO poster will be limited to an edition of 137 copies, signed and numbered by yours truly. Why 137? Because it's a prime number, that's why. (Sometimes it's like you don't even know who I am!)
Each poster also comes with two stickers.
$30: The Love Poem Poster + 2 Stickers
This three color poster will also be printed by hand and measure 18 x 24 inches. It features the full text of my original Love Poem in a striking font. While this poster won't be signed and numbered, it will be a KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE! I'll print up all the copies you folks want, but after this campaign ends this poster will never be printed with these three inks on this color of paper for this poster again.
However, if this combination isn't your style, then these 2-color options will also be available:
These humorous rhymes would look great in any home and during dinner parties it will give that socially awkward guest something to stand near and read! (Over and over again if they have to. Maybe you should introduce him or her to your other guests.)
Some imagination is required when viewing these posters on your screen. Though the text was laid out in Illustrator to 0.0001" inch, they'll be printed by hand and all that perfection will go out the window. It's those slight imperfections make it that much better, but you don't need me to tell you about the benefits of wabi sabi. You know how to use Google, right?
$45: Two Poster Bundle + 4 Stickers
Early Bird Option: $38. Limited supplies!
Choose the UFO + any Love Poem poster or choose a combination of two Love Poem posters. Either way you'll also get four (4) stickers.
Maybe. I have a few things in mind. Maybe some different paper options. Maybe some quirky extras, but first I'm more concerned with hitting that initial funding.
When I graduated college I was intimidated by the qualifications for the few jobs I found loosely related to my field of art. Now years later I find myself wanting to make art full-time. Kickstarter has the most cachet of all the crowdfunding sites and offers an opportunity for the online community to support artists like myself. I know because I've enjoyed backing a number of projects here and hope you will do the same for me now.
How Will The Funds Be Used?
The cost of printing the initial run of prints and stickers is about $900. Shipping costs represent about $750. I've budgeted an extra 10% for things that may go wrong (packaging costs rising or replacing damaged prints) and the remainder is made up of Kickstarter and Credit Card Processing Fees.
Meeting the bare minimum goal gets these posters printed and rewards shipped. It leaves me with some new works for my portfolio and an inventory of posters and stickers that I would hope to sell later, but not much pocket change. Your support beyond the base goal helps me buy new tools and supplies for creating art and helps me transition to making art full time.
Risks and challenges
The designs are done. I already have a collection of packaging supplies and I'm prepared to order more if necessary. I still have to do some clean up on the separations before delivering them to my printer, Steve Walters, at Screwball Press in Chicago. Steve has been making silkscreened posters for more than 20 years.
If the right paper suddenly isn't available, I'll find a suitable substitute.
If Steve's arms should be ripped off in the doors of an EL train, I know of some other printers I can reach out to (after I send Steve a "Hope your arms grow back soon" card first, of course).
If I should meet an untimely end before this campaign ends, my ghost will give instructions to the executors of my estate to get these posters printed and delivered. But I'm not going to lie, that will probably set back the delivery a bit.
The timeline I've set for fulfillment is two months from the campaign end. That gives Steve a month to print and me a month to deliver. If more than 1200 poster orders are placed, some deliveries may be delayed, but at that level of funding I should be able to pay a few folks to help me get them out on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
