Drama / Black Comedy
In a cheap living room in Westport, New Zealand, a kid's birthday party is in full swing. While the children are caught up in the ecstasy of the party, their parents are entangled in more ‘adult’ affairs.
Young mum Hayley, like most of the parents present, went straight from adolescence into parenthood. The isolation of this small town has bred in her a dangerous mix of emotional immaturity + boredom. While her daughter dances, Hayley is engaged in adulterous conversation with Kaleb, a dad across the room. As their exchange becomes increasingly illicit it attracts the attention of Emma, sanctimonious mother of the birthday boy, who is more than happy to advise Hayley of the danger of her actions.
Fortunately, Hayley is presented an opportunity for revenge in the form of Emma’s 16-year-old son.
There are three things that went into the idea for this film. The first was when my Spotify played the ’97 remix of Run DMC’s It’s Like That. I thought slo-mo shots of kids rocking out would look funny. The second was a conversation about the characters I’d like to play. I realised that the characters I liked were presented unsympathetically. They they had more depth, were difficult to watch, got under my skin. I also realised that women rarely get to play such characters. The final element, which was actually, technically the first, is simply that I love the West Coast + I want to write films about it.

Risks and challenges
SKANK is set to be shot in New Zealand right before Christmas, so we've been in pre-production for the last few months to make sure we're ahead of the game. We've lined up most of our crew and are now in the process of casting and location scouting. We've organised the shoot to get the best quality performances and have as much fun with the kids as possible!
Back in the UK the post production schedule is designed to compliment the production of our next round of Film for a Fiver, leading up to our launch party in Feb 2015.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
