Umotia: Control your Playstation 4 with any universal remote
Umotia allows you control the Playstation 4 without the controller using virtually any universal remote control.
With 35+ million units sold, the Sony Playstation 4 has proven to be a capable gaming platform. The Playstation 4 is also widely used as a Bluray player and for streaming video from services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon. It's performance and support make it one of the best options for a media center.
The one thing lacking from the Playstation 4 to make it a complete solution is infrared (IR) remote control support. It only supports Bluetooth controllers or remotes. Many popular universal remote controls, such as older Logitech Harmony, do not support Bluetooth. The newer remotes that support Bluetooth through a hub can control the Playstation 4, but cannot turn it on. This is a severe limitation.
Umotia solves these issues by providing a easy to use device that connects in through HDMI and uses a supported feature known as HDMI Device Link to control the Playstation 4.
Simply disconnect the existing HDMI cable from your Playstation 4 and plug into Umotia. Use provided HDMI cable to connect Umotia to Playstation 4.
Now enable HDMI Device Link in the Playstation 4 Settings->System menu as shown in the video. Plug Umotia in to the power outlet.
On your universal remote, chose the DVD device category and select the Sony BDP-S370 DVD player or equivalent.
The Umotia software is fully upgradeable through USB, so it can be kept up to date with any changes that might occur. To update Umotia, simply hold down button on the side:
Then instead of plugging USB cable into power adapter, plug into computer and release button. Then use Umotia update software to download latest version and flash to hardware.
Umotia also has powerful diagnostics to help in case of a hardware compatibility issue. Please see video below for an example:
The printed circuit board for Umotia is finalized and ready for production. The plastic enclosure is a prototype. This is a picture showing the Umotia internal circuitry.

Risks and challenges
The Umotia electronics and software have had extensive testing and are complete. Umotia has been tested with 2 revisions of Playstation 4 and 3 brands of TV's and 2 brands of A/V receivers.
The enclosure is a prototype and needs to be finalized. The enclosure in the product pictures and video is 3D printed. The final enclosure will be injection molded black plastic and the front will be an the dark purple transparent plastic typically seen on remote controls. The enclosure design is straightforward, therefore I don't foresee any risks with the design or manufacturing.
Part of the funding will be used to send Umotia to a testing center to obtain HDMI certification. Since Umotia only passes through the video part of HDMI, there should be no issues. I will also need to obtain the compliance certifications for USA, Japan, Europe, and China, such as FCC, CE, and CC. I have many years experience in high-end server development, so I am very familiar with certification processes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
