Inspired by the successful funding of my first 3 Kickstarter campaigns I decided to create a new product made of Titanium.
I have always been fascinated by the simplicity and ingenuity of small mechanical devices and metal gadgets including paper clips, "bull dog" clips, staples, binder clips and springs. While most paper clips work reasonably well, they are often bland in design and meant to be semi-disposable. Some clips work great to hold one or two pieces of paper while others work best on thicker stacks of paper. I really like the old brass page markers but I lose them all the time because they don't have enough holding power and get polished and "slippery" over time.
I decided to create a variety of page markers / clips that were interesting to look at and would hold very well. Clips that are made of Titanium so they have excellent holding power, flexibility, resiliency and will not rust. Clips designed to last a lifetime.
Research and prototypes
I researched and tested a variety of clip designs currently on the market. I also looked at expired patents and vintage clips at antique stores and through the internet. Here are a few of the many patents I reviewed:
I made up some sketches and cut some prototypes from titanium sheet. I was fortunate that the thickness of the material I selected was a very good balance between holding strength and ease of use.
Many existing clip designs have "teeth" or sharp edges to keep them for slipping off the paper. For my clips, I have sand blasted them so they have a good grip but without being too abusive to the paper.
In keeping with the simplicity of a page marker clip, I am offering 2 types of clips; "Retro" clips and "Marker Clips". All clips come in a natural titanium color and a matte finish. All edges are smoothed for easy use.
Inspired by clips produced in the early 1900's in Europe. These clips lay flat like a sheet of paper when not in use but have excellent holding force when holding a single or multiple sheets of paper. These clips work by creating a torsional force while being opened.
Retro clips also work great as a:
- Money clip
- Tie clip
- Bag closure
- Memo book closure
- Business card holder
You name it!
The page marker clip rewards come in a variety of styles.
1.) The Sailor themed clips include a swallow, an anchor, a star and a sailboat.
2.) The Skull themed clips have 4 different style skulls, one of which hides inside the book to be revealed upon opening the book.
2a.) Furrow Books, which funded a successful Kickstarter campaign, has launched a new line of memo notebooks. They have a cool minimalist design and innovative template system that makes them very useful. You can check out the campaign by clicking HERE. Working with Aaron Zeller I have created a set of markers with the Furrow logo.
3.) The Typewriter key themed markers have a nostalgic design inspired by old typewriter keys. For this reward you will be able to pick the letters or characters you would like to receive as a reward.

By popular demand, all Marker Clip rewards are available in a "Low Profile" format as well as the "Tab" style. This means you can select your reward as either Tab or Low Profile version. Low Profile markers have the decorative image on the bottom of the marker as shown in this CAD drawing.
Thanks to those of you that suggested this option!
Travel Icon Clips added - 7/29
In response to a backers request I have added a 5 piece Travel Icon clip set. These will be titanium just like all the others. Offered in a low profile version, these are perfect for keeping your travel documents in order, your passport indexed to the proper page for stamping, your itinerary organized, etc.
Sea Creature Clips added - 8/4
4 Titanium Clips in a low profile configuration only. The clips include an image of a Penguin, Dolphin, Sea Horse and Sea Turtle.
Use of funds
Funds will be used to purchase the titanium sheet, craft and deliver the clips. Titanium is an expensive material and can be finicky to work with and scrap is not uncommon. This has been factored into the plan.
- Raw material sources have been identified.
- Parts will be cut, finished and sandblasted in my shop.
- To keep shipping costs down, especially for international backers, clips will be sent first class mail.
- Standard shipping materials will be used.
- Surveys will be sent to all backers for "custom" rewards so that your selections can be fulfilled.
- All rewards will be shipped in a timely manner.
Risks and challenges
This is a very low risk project. For those of you that have backed my previous Kickstarter projects, you know that I have a track record of producing high quality rewards in a timely manner.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
