Metal Comb Works: Compact pocket combs crafted from solid brass and titanium alloy.
I am proud to offer new designs and materials in this, my 6th Kickstarter campaign and my third campaign offering artisan metal combs. Check out my first comb campaign for details on the inspiration for creating Metal Comb Works and my first few comb designs here: http://kck.st/HgZuZm

In this campaign I am offering 3 new designs crafted from brass and titanium. This time I have created compact combs which are perfect as an everyday carry item. Unlike credit card style "combs" that are made from thin stamped metal with sharp edges, our combs are finely finished and crafted from thick metal sheet. Our combs are crafted to last a lifetime.
The combs in this campaign are the "Popper", the "Split" and the "Mini". Read on for a more in-depth description of the combs and why they are so cool!
Machine and Handcrafted:
All combs are blanked (laser cut) here locally at a shop near my home in San Marcos, California. From there, our staff, grinds, deburrs and finishes each comb by hand. 100% made in the USA using modern machining techniques and a heavy dose of elbow grease. The perfect balance between machine and handcrafted.
Materials - Solid Brass & G5 Titanium:
I am using 2 different high quality materials for this project:
- Aerospace Grade 5 titanium alloy for its light weight, strength and physical properties.
- Naval brass for its weight, color and timeless beauty.
The thickness of these material is just right for this application at between 1/10th and 1/8th of an inch. Both materials require minimal care and will last your lifetime and beyond.
About Brass: Brass was created by man thousands of years ago and has been appreciated for its strength, corrosion resistance and beautiful gold color since its discovery. The heft of the material immediately confers strength and timeless quality. Simply put, brass just feels good in your hand.
Brass is a an alloy of copper, zinc and sometimes other trace elements depending on the alloy. Brass is non-ferromagnetic so it is often used in precision instruments; telescopes, watches, compasses, etc. Brass is also used for marine hardware, propellers and other more industrial applications.
Brass is an excellent material for a comb. Unlike wood or plastic, a brass comb will last for many generations with just a little care. Brass forms a natural patina depending on the environment it is in and can be polished to maintain a bright finish.
About Titanium: Titanium as an element was discovered in 1791 and named after the Titans of Greek mythology. The two most useful properties of the metal are corrosion resistance and strength-to-density ratio, the highest of any metallic element. Titanium has a naturally beautiful deep gray color that will never rust.
We are using grade 5 titanium alloy for our rewards. Grade 5 has an excellent combination of strength and corrosion resistance and is significantly stronger than commercially pure titanium. Our titanium combs are virtually indestructible.
We are offering 6 different compact combs; 3 designs in brass and titanium alloy. They are available with optional sheaths and card holders made of leather or denim. The combs are compact in size so they fit nicely in a coin pocket, purse, wallet or any other small space and are great as part of your everyday carry. Tooth spacing in medium / fine so they make excellent general purpose hair combs or beard combs.
The Popper - Offered in Titanium or Brass, the Popper is 2.5" in width. A small hole machined in the spine can be used for a paracord, lanyard or attachment to your key ring. The Popper also has a bottle opener feature machined into the spine for opening your favorite capped beverage!
The Mini - Offered in Titanium or Brass, the Mini is 2.5" in width. Lightening holes are machined in the spine of the comb and provide excellent grip. The holes at each end can be used for a paracord, lanyard or attachment to your key ring.
The Split - Offered in Titanium or Brass, the Split is 2.5" in width. The Split has two windows cut into the spine, similar to the rear window of early Fords, Corvettes or VW bugs. This vintage styling not only looks cool, but provides excellent grip. Use the the windows to attach a paracord, lanyard or key ring.
Sheaths and Card Holder:
We are offering 3 carrying options for your compact comb. A handcrafted sheath made of Horween leather or denim with red stitching.
We are also offering a card holder that has a sewn pocket on the back where you can keep your comb. The card pocket can hold several standard credit cards, you ID, etc. The pocket on the back accepts any of our compact combs.
Paper art has always been fascinating to me. The ingenuity involved in creating an Origami swan or a complex children's pop-up book from a flat piece of paper is amazing. I have taken some effort to create my own packaging design to pack each comb.
The inspiration for the packaging is the old style matchbox with the slide tray and sleeve. I have worked with a really cool outfit in the Pacific Northwest to make the packs which are suitable for gift giving or comb storage.
I hope you will appreciate the simple but effective package when you receive your reward.
Funding will be used to purchase raw materials, supplies and to build custom fixtures to final machine and polish each comb efficiently. It is a risky investment to offer production quantities and volume pricing without backer support. The funds will be used to purchase titanium and brass sheet along with polishing compounds, grinding belts, and tooling. Your pledge will allow me to purchase materials in bulk to support economies of scale and keep costs down on the finished combs.
Production and Fulfillment Plan
Here is an overview of how I will bring your rewards to you! I will personally manage or perform all of the activities listed below unless otherwise noted.
- Product design: Complete. I have CAD drawings ready for the 3 comb designs. I created these drawings using a free software program called DraftSight.
- Material selection: Complete. I will use solid brass and grade 5 titanium alloy.
- Prototyping: Complete. Prototypes are shown in the photos above.
- Raw material sourcing: Vendors have been identified and quotations are secured for the sheet materials. Lead time is less than 3 days for this material including shipping.
- Comb "blanking" (laser cutting): Vendors have been identified and quotations are secured. Lead time is 2 to 5 working days after receipt of material. I will blank all 4 designs at the same time.
- Final machining: This will be done in my shop. Lead time will depend on which comb type is most popular but we have the capacity to build 100 combs per day including the finishing and packaging operations listed below.
- Finishing: Deburring and finishing is the most time consuming process step per comb. We have the capacity to polish more than 100 combs per day by myself and can add manpower to help with this step if necessary.
- Packaging and delivery: We will do this operation with the support of my family and friends will ship promptly.
I have limited this funding effort to 30 days. With successful funding I am targeting no later than August 2017 as the ship date for all rewards.
Thank you for your support!
Risks and challenges
This project is low risk as I have worked through many of the design and fabrication challenges already. Real prototypes are shown in the images here. If the project becomes massively over funded it could push back the delivery date. With that said, anyone who pledges to my project can do so with confidence as I have a history of promptly delivering quality rewards.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
