About

Players will require entrepreneurship, cunning, and creativity to survive in the outrageous world of G.M.O.ooh!  Real-life GMO foods and controversies are intermingled with bizarre new inventions to create the ultimate party game.  This is your chance to stand up to the Big Bio-Tech Corporations and introduce Genetically Modified Organisms to your friends and family.  Most suitable for Ages 14+.

G.M.O.ooh! Game Play

There are two types of cards within the game: G.M.O.ooh! Cards and Challenge Cards.

Each G.M.O.ooh! Card has a Name, Description, and Category Ratings for Profit, Cost, Environmental Impact, Demand, and Risk.

There are 4 color-coded species of G.M.O.ooh! Cards with examples below:

  • 18 Green Plant Cards

  • 9 Blue Aquatic Cards

  • 7 Brown Mammal Cards

  • 6 Purple Bird and Insect Card

Each round of game play starts with the dealer picking their best category from their top G.M.O.ooh! Card.  The highest score in that category becomes the Current Leader.  Losing players can then play one of their three Challenge Cards or pass.  Momentum shifts quickly as the Current Leader can change several times in one round.  The round ends when all losing players pass or reach their limit of one Challenge per round.

There are 3 types of Challenge Cards with examples below:

  • 30 Blue Debate Cards

  • 17 Red Action Cards – Add points to your category, switch categories.

  • 4 Green Special Cards – Reincarnate losing cards or steal cards from opponents.

The blue Debate Cards lead to the most fun component of the game.  The challenging player has 30 seconds to convince the non-debating players that their Organism is superior to their opponent’s.  The player getting challenged has 30 seconds to defend.  The last 30 seconds is open to everyone.  All non-debating players vote for the winner.  Win the debate and become Current Leader.  Debate Cards include Fight, Outgrow, Mate, Race, Survive, Out-think, Danger, Sales Pitch, and Category Challenge.

Each round will have one winning G.M.O.ooh! Card.  The losing cards are discarded.  The last player with a surviving G.M.O.ooh Card wins the game.

Game Status

All writing for G.M.O.ooh! is complete.  Approximately 75% of the art is also complete with a plan in place to finish by the end of August, 2014.

A significant portion of the Kickstarter funding will be used to pay the artists for their detailed work.  Kickstarter funds will also be applied towards the expenses of promoting G.M.O.ooh! at the Origins game convention in Columbus, Ohio.  Please stop by our booth if you're at the show.  Kickstarter funding will also go towards construction of the game itself.

Meet the Team

Jon Pawelko

I'm absolutely thrilled to see the launch of the G.M.O.ooh! Kickstarter campaign.  We've been working on the writing and design for 2+ years and can now see the finish line!

I have been developing political cartoons with Lampoon The System since 2008.  This work branched out into animation, sketch comedy, talk show segments, campaign ads, logos, and gaming.  I'd like to thank 2 Chicago institutions for their contributions to my writing/gaming work... Second City for the comedy writing training I received and Chicagoland Games for the extensive game testing support environment.  We spent ~6 months testing at Chicagoland Games, so rest assured the rules and strategies have been reviewed by the best!

I don't claim to have the answers around the benefits and risks of Genetically Modified Organisms.  I do believe that the GMO research and testing should be much more visible to the public.  G.M.O.ooh! was designed to raise awareness of this important cause in a creative, fun environment.

Risks and challenges

I have been working with the artists for 4+ years and am confident we will complete the last few cards on time.

I have obtained two quotes for game construction, TheGameCrafter.com for lower volumes and Panda for higher volumes. These are experienced companies that have supported several crowdfunded projects.
