The historic Kiggins Theatre in Vancouver, Washington is an independently owned, single-screen movie theatre. Since opening in 1936, the theatre has been an icon on the Downtown Vancouver landscape and a community hub for generations. Today, the Kiggins presents the best in independent, classic and art-house cinema, as well as providing an affordable venue for non-profit organizations to hold their events, and local filmmakers to screen their works.
Beginning this year major film distributors will no longer release films via 35mm prints. Digital projection will become the mandatory norm for cinemas across the nation by the end of 2013. The funds raised through the Kickstarter campaign will allow the Kiggins Theatre to purchase and install a digital projection system, which will satisfy the projection standards of major distributors and open new programming opportunities for the Theatre. It will also allow us to upgrade our sound system. Without securing a digital projector, the film selection available to Kiggins Theatre will become marginal and our ability to serve our community severely threatened.
The Kiggins Theatre is committed to serving our community and cinema. When the theatre originally opened, it proudly advertised its dedication to providing everlasting entertainment and comfort. We at the Kiggins Theatre recognize our opportunity and privilege to serve the Vancouver community, and hope that with your support of this campaign we can continue to entertain our community for generations to come.
Risks and challenges
If the Kickstarter is successfully funded, installation of the digital projector will take place no later than December 2013. We are prepared with a network of knowledgeable contractors and electricians who can assist with any issues that may arise when introducing 21st century technology into the historic cinema.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
