The Musical Art Quintet: Chamber con Alma
Innovative, rhythmic, modern chamber music with fiery improvisation and an infusion of world music influences.
After the critical success of our first album Nuevo Chamber, we are ready to follow up with another groundbreaking record, Chamber con Alma (Chamber with Soul). Each track on the album represents the soulful and deep meaning that music can bring when it's vibrations reach our bodies and minds. The Musical Art Quintet is raising funds to record, mix, master and print our second album. The program for the album includes masterworks by the great American composer/musicians Duke Ellington (Fleurette Africaine), George Gershwin (Rhapsody in Blue), Jelly Roll Morton (The Crave), John Coltrane (Resolution) Michel Camilo (From Within) and Tito Puente (Un Poco Mas), all arranged for the quintet by band leader Sascha Jacobsen. The album will also feature original compositions by bandleader Sascha Jacobsen. We will have many special guests on the album including Carlos Caro, Eric Garland and many more.
The Musical Art Quintet is:
Anthony Blea, violin, Jory Fankuchen, violin, Charith Premawardhana, viola, Lewis Patzner, cello, Sascha Jacobsen, bass, composer, bandleader
This album will also be partially funded by The San Francisco Friends of Chamber Music.

reviews from Nuevo Chamber, our first album:
STRAD Magazine: "...Stylish and Vigorous...beautifully arranged"
Songlines Magazine: "spontaneity shines through on this classy debut album"
East Bay Express: "Classical music is sexy again. Lest you doubt that, look no further than Mission District chamber group The Musical Art Quintet"
SF Examiner: "A stunning demonstration of how jazz improvisation can be performed as effectively by an ensemble of string players as it can by any more conventional combo."
SF Bay Guardian: "composer-bassist Sascha Jacobsen's concoctions hop nimbly through a world of styles while impressing with ear-catching intricacy and handsome technique....indelible tracks like "Milonga de San Francisco" and Afrobeat-inflected "Fela Feliz" are spirited treats that will have you twirling across the floor."
NY Times: "polished performance"
SF Weekly: "Plenty of local bands are ambitious; San Francisco's Musical Art Quintet is trailblazing its own genre. The group, led by bassist and composer Sascha Jacobsen, grew out of Classical Revolution jams at which Jacobsen would write out a new piece of music for his group to perform on the spot. His pieces seek to combine and remix elements of chamber music with rhythms and sounds from all over the world. A Musical Art Quintet composition might meld influences from Africa, Argentina, or Cuba — and even a drum machine — into a globe-hopping, dance-inspiring, gorgeous work. Classical training and a taste for evocative melodies underpin this sound, but improvisation and lively rhythms make the group's "Nuevo Chamber" music truly its own.
World Music Central: "Nuevo Chamber is a superb fusion of chamber compositions and global sounds by one of the emerging talents in the world music scene."
Risks and challenges
After successfully funding and recording our first album, I truly feel that nothing could stop us from completing this second album. That said, life can always present unforeseen challenges. My promise to you is that we will stay committed to finishing this project, no matter what obstacles present themselves.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
