Ripening – Seedlings is the newest live performance installation of my ongoing project Ripening. Ripening explores our manifold emotional, physical, and psychological relationships with time and the inevitable cruelty it wreaks. Through film, installation, and live performance, each Ripening installment traverses themes of aging and beauty, vanity, femininity, fantasies and nightmares. The journey is one of arriving, becoming, blossoming, maturing, decaying, and ultimately transforming.
I began Ripening because of my amazing Australian grandmother, Georgie Jeffries, an extraordinary woman who lived nearly to the age of 110. We were deeply connected. I was astonished by her joy in life, her clarity, her awareness, spirit, and longevity. Inspired by my favorite Australian childhood book given to me by my grandmother, 'The Complete Adventures of Snugglepot & Cuddlepie' by May Gibbs, Seedlings is a foray into the infinitesimal. Like the beautiful and idiosyncratic illustrations in May Gibbs’ book, this work invites the audience to delight in both the delicacy and majesty of nature and the playfulness of a child’s consciousness. Seedlings is a live performance premiere forged by original music, video projections, elaborate costumes, set pieces and lots of dance. This work creates a microcosm of blossoms, sprouts, burrs, and acorns - a playground for time bending, ritual, and revelry.
My fantastic collaborators are music makers/composers/performers Maneesh Raj Madahar, Curtis Tamm, Trevor Vaughn, and Omar Zubair; dancers Lynn Barr, Katie Dorn, Kyle Gerry, Gwen Gussman, Vincent McCloskey, and Michelle Yard; video designers Brian Gonzalez/TAXIPLASM and Nicholas Papadakis; costumers David Quinn and Karen Young; set design and props artist Dena Paige Fischer; and makeup artist Jodi King. This will all take place at Triskelion Arts on April 26 - 28 of 2018 where we are delighted to have our second season! The funds raised will be for rehearsal space rental, costumes, set pieces, video creation, administrative and promotion materials, and most of all, the time and labor of my collaborators. In addition, similar to former live Ripening shows, the video footage, characters, choreography, and concepts for Seedlings will be absorbed into the material we draw from as we work on the future Ripening feature to come!
Risks and challenges
Once again, this campaign is for rehearsal space rental, costumes, set pieces, video creation, administrative and promotion materials, and most of all, the time and labor of my collaborators. It will allow me to pay the performers and creators. Also, similar to former live Ripening shows, the video footage, characters, choreography, and concepts for Seedlings will be absorbed into the material we draw from as we work on the future Ripening feature to come. Ripening is ever-evolving and will need funding for the feature as well as future Ripening installations in 2018 and beyond.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
