Materials + Process is a design studio based in San Francisco. We design and craft a line of functional leather goods to support the modern creative and explorer. Through our materials, our products become living examples of your daily ventures. By recognizing essential functionality and using authentic materials, we naturally build longevity into our products. We hope our work inspires you.
For the last 3 years, I have been crafting each product by hand. As a designer and maker, this has been an incredibly fulfilling process - but as a small business owner, it's become very limiting. Now as a new mom, I have even less time! After reviewing several manufacturing options, I decided that working with a domestic manufacturer was crucial - as a small maker I wanted to grow my business supporting other American businesses. With your help, we’ll be able to continue to create beautiful high quality leather goods with a local American manufacturer we can trust. By making this shift, I'll be able to share my products with more people and create new designs again.
Our story started with one bag. As an industrial designer for the outdoor industry and an avid cycler, I found that I needed a bag that I could confidently carry into a client's office and also one that I can comfortably ride with. I soon decided to challenge myself to design and create one myself. The beauty and story of the natural vegetable tan leather as an ever evolving material drew me in. (Did you know that the leather is tanned with tree bark and vegetable roots ...cool huh!) From this process, the Sacagawea Carryall was born. Designed with the hard functionality of classic hiking packs but the simplicity and durability of leather, the carryall is meant to transport all of your essentials, with both style and comfort in mind. In its natural state, as the leather ages, its color and texture caramelizes recording your experiences making your bag one of a kind.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
While most of our products will still be hand crafted, we need your help in producing our larger and more popular pieces. We are currently finalizing our design samples with our manufacturing partner. Your funds will contribute to the expensive steel dies needed for all the pattern pieces, buying raw materials and hardware that all domestically sourced, and meeting the minimum order quantity for each design from our manufacturer. Added up, these costs are more than my small making business can handle on its own.
By backing our campaign, you can carry our products in pride knowing you support American manufacturing and the growth of our small business. You'll also be the first to carry some of our newest colorways and designs! And for our longtime supporters and fans, we have have an early bird special - be sure to check it out!
Don’t forget! Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing venture. Your generous pledge only works when we meet our full funding goal. Once you pledge, please consider spreading the word to your friends and family. We’re all in this together!
We are offering special prices only for this Kickstarter campaign.
Thank you so much for all your support. Your belief in our company means the world to us!

Risks and challenges
Please note that our products are made out of quality leather, which is a natural material - slight variations and irregularities are to be expected. Furthermore, in many of our products we use vegetable tanned leather. Vegetable tanning is a natural process that involves tanning the leather with vegetable roots and tree bark giving its iconic tea stained look. This leather is warm and personal changing its texture and color over time through exposure to the sun and elements. It will not stay in its original pristine state, it has no protective coatings because of its natural tanning process. Even a single raindrop change the color. Eventually in time the leather color evolves and caramelizes into a finish and look that is truly your own.
Our vegetable tanned leather is as natural as it can be with no protective coating or finishes to keep in line with the natural dying process of the leather. If you wish to keep a more uniform look or wish to protect your leather, many over the leather counter cleaners and conditioners can help you achieve this. We suggest using more natural products such as neatsfoot or minks oil. We strongly suggest taking it to your local professional leather cleaner for care and application of any coatings. Without any coatings or protectants, your leather will be turn darker over time aging gracefully, a process we love and advise for all our products.
We hope to deliver by the beginning of September. It takes a few weeks to create steel dies once the designs have been finalized and to order materials and hardware. From there, another 10-12 weeks for production of all styles. Delivery times may be affected by availability of the leather. As a natural material and since we try to get the largest and best quality hides, stock can vary. We are also working with a new manufacturer and we want to make sure the quality assurance in on par. So far so good, but if things go ary in any way we'll be sure to keep you updated on the process.
