The Historic Comet Theater needs your support to purchase new digital equipment to continue projecting into the future.
HISTORIC COMET THEATER
PROJECTS INTO THE FUTURE
The Historic Comet Theater, Minnesota’s longest continuous running single screen theater, must acquire digital equipment to continue as a movie theater.
Launched: March 15, 2013
Funding ends: May 15, 2013
As film is phased out, movies will be produced and available only in digital format. The Comet Theater must acquire and install digital equipment to continue showing first run movies. This equipment is expensive, and it is not feasible for small historic theaters like the Comet to make these changes on their own, particularly in "North Woods" Minnesota which calls the Boundary Waters and Voyagers National Forest home.
The Historic Comet Theater www.comettheater.com is a unique and charming, single screen theater, which has been entertaining our rural community for almost 75 years, opening in 1939. Some of the first movies shown were Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind. Hollywood first run movies have been showing ever since. In 2000 the Comet added a Coffee & Gift Shop as well as a Clothing Boutique to better serve the residents and visitors of the area. The Comet also hosts concerts, literary readings, and small theater productions, much to the delight of local residents and visitors from the Twin Cities and elsewhere who come to enjoy the beauty of the Lake Vermilion area. Sadly, other small theaters like ours have closed years ago.
The Comet, however, with its fun and eclectic clothing/gift boutique, the quality Coffee Shop, and its nostalgic, cozy theater has continued to attract movie goers and has become a destination for people visiting the region. The Comet is a gem, a one of a kind theater.
We need Digital Equipment because movie studios are reducing their costs for the production and distribution of movies by eliminating the use of film for all movies. Therefore, we must “go digital or go dark”. It would be a shame that unaffordable technology, rather than hard work, deprives our residents and visitors of a gathering place to appreciate cinema and other forms of art.
This new equipment will also improve our movie patron’s access to more movies like independent and documentary's in a more timely fashion with better picture and sound quality.
The Comet Theater www.comettheater.com is located in northeast Minnesota in Cook, a unique rural community of 600 residents. During the summer the Comet serves the many visitors, lake homeowners and their guests drawn to the area by the beautiful lakes, wilderness, and National and State Parks. Cook is at the west end of Lake Vermilion and borders the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Not only does the Comet show great movies, it draw hundreds of people to our community to enjoy the ambiance of this historical building and to experience the artistic events we host. The Comet Theater is now a must see attraction when visiting Northern Minnesota. It offers needed entertainment and provides a gathering spot for our community, summer residents and visitors.
The Community Benefits from the Comet by providing a venue for healthy entertainment and a place for young and old to gather. The Comet is also a successful fund raising “Movie Nights” tool for nonprofits like W.C. Heiam Medical Foundation, the Cook Public Library, our local Hospice Program, Northwoods Friends of the Arts, Lyric Center for the Arts, as well as benefits held for local residents. School children from surrounding schools often enjoy movie outings as rewards for jobs well done or for educational purposes. Senior Citizens groups, nursing home residents, religious groups and individuals have all booked special movie showings to meet their needs.
If the Comet is able to continue showing films through the acquisition of digital equipment, we hope to preserve our historic place in the community and foster the arts amidst the natural beauty of Northern Minnesota, not only for our local residents but for the thousands who spend a short but special time here each year.
The Comet needs your support. We just break even on covering the cost of the movies through reasonably priced ticket sales and concessions, as well as by cutting the number of movies shown during our “OFF SEASON”. The Coffee & Gift Shop help supplement operating costs during slow times. Still, benefits to the community outweigh the financial gain as a business. We have worked hard to keep the doors open, not just to show movies, but to create a footprint of art and expression in the north woods. The cost of this equipment is well beyond our means.
Substantial discounts for digital equipment are given to multiplex theaters and large chains, but are not offered to small single screen theaters.
Our funding goal of $80,000 will cover: the purchase of a digital projector, an upgraded audio system to deliver digitally produced sound and a new venting system in our projection room; cost of installation and alignment of new equipment.
Funding through Kickstarter is an all-or-nothing opportunity. If our $80,000 goal is not reached within 60 days, none of the pledged funds will be charged and the Comet will go dark. However, if we are fortunate to exceed our goal, additional funds will be used for other theater needs. It will provide current and future generations with an even greater movie-going experience that can only be provided in this unique historical theater.
We need support from those of you who love the movies, love historic movie theaters, and all of you who love The Comet Theater and wish to enhance the quality of life in this magical area.
Thank you for your support helping the “Historic Comet Theater” Project into the Future. The Comet is a for profit organization, so contributions to this campaign are not tax deductible.

The only issue may be installing the new equipment after our busy season starts in mid May. Having talked with the company who will do the installation, they think spring is the perfect time to get this completed. But if it takes a little longer this would not be a problem. Having run the Comet Theater for 12 years now, there is not anything in this project that we cannot tackle. From this end I have dealt with issues from every perspective, ie building issues, equipment issues, movie issues, and worker issues.
