Ties of the Ribbon is a complex layered thriller from London-born director and screenwriter Jason Ferguson.
Having spent the first half of his creative career in music Jason honed his skills for visuals working with some of the biggest UK artists at the Amy Winehouse/ Keane/ Angel. This gave him the creative inspiration for story telling using film and video.
First envisioned over two years ago, the film has received support from experienced documentary filmmaker Vanessa Van-Yeboah (BBC/Channel 4) and talented colourist Michelle Kort (Ex Machina/ The Crown/ The Kings Speech). In order to create a cinematic, visual masterpiece on a short film budget, we have pulled-in favours from our contacts all over the film industry and some very talented emerging talent including our Sound Design team who have worked with the likes of Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Wretch 32, Noam Murro, 20th Century Fox, Biscuit Filmworks, Pantene, Universal Music, Tilney, Grey London and Sony Pictures. Their work and the work of our talented DOP Hax Ahmet, will be key for adding emotion into our visuals.
We believe this script is strong enough to take it all the way to the big screen but we need your help and support to make this happen!
A phone rings, a dozen texts are received and an engagement is missed... only by the end do we know who the roses are for...
Ties of the Ribbon follows Mr Violet, a professional in his 30s, throughout a midsummer’s day.
During what at first appears to be a fairly normal morning, Mr Violet awakes to a flurry of texts from a familiar source but he decides to ignore these throughout the day - could this be a spurned love interest or a worried spouse?
Mr Violet feeling guilty, decides to make up for this avoidance and stops by his favourite florist’s run by Mr Fairbrooke, to pick up some flowers for them... roses for that special someone, will they be waiting for him at home?
The day comes to a close and Mr Violet rushes back to do some grovelling but we notice something strange about the apartment and more significantly, the bed.
There seems to have been a struggle and the bedroom door is ajar. Something stirs from underneath the covers and the door shuts...
Great character development is essential to any script. What sets our film apart is the use of visual storytelling over a traditional mix of dialogue. The cinematic nature of this film requires our cast to really approach their character roles in a very expressive yet natural way.
Paloma Andrade studied acting gaining a diploma at Croydon School of Arts in 2013. She has also attended many acting workshops, as well as a few acting courses at Actors Studio and The Academy. She performed in many speaking roles, a few of these being Ikstuarpok, The Break Up and Against the Wake.
Kamil is a seasoned stuntman/model and actor. Best known for his role in Final Score and upcoming Guy Ritchie film King Arthur.
Originally from Greenock, Renfrewshire in the west central Lowlands of Scotland, Kenneth has starred in a number of short films, TV commercials and plays.
Ties of the Ribbon has a clear cinematic vision in mind for the production. As the film has very little dialogue the story relies heavily on clear visual storytelling through DRAMATIC and STUNNING imagery. The character development around the two central figures in the film is built up through layers that will force the viewer to question motives and encourage them to rewatch the film to see the subtle clues that will all be apparent towards its compelling climax. Our cinematographer and director on this project have a strong passion for immersive and thought provoking filmmaking. Creative camera techniques, immersive sound design and stark colour choices will combine to give the film a strong cinematic aesthetic. There are four central locations where the film takes place.
The Apartment, this aesthetic is important to give context to the central character and through this we learn some important clues about one of the main characters.
An exclusive bar, the introduction to Mr Violet and Fern. Here amongst the lavish furnishing and within a secret room we are exposed to the intimate setting of the characters.
This film builds suspense through sound a visuals.
We want to create a conversation around the film, have the viewer question the plot and really force the audience to rewatch the film to discover the full story...
The unlikely romance between Mr Violet and Fern has a duplicitous nature.
In order to capture this, we will be referencing some classic cinema influencers (FATAL ATTRACTION, BASIC INSTINCT.)
This quickly changes to an uncomfortable very scary and very real fear.
We're drawing on some of our cinematic heroes like (Christopher Nolan/Joel Schumacher/Amma Asante) whose film style is visceral, innovative and unique, as well looking to the dark and atmospheric photography of Dariusz Wolski, Greig Fraser and Emmanuel Lubezki. This project hopes to serve as a testament to the vision of the director's drive to create a piece of thought provoking art.
We’d love to win a bunch of awards and take this all the way to the BIG SCREEN.
Ties of the Ribbon will be entered into the major festivals like Tribeca, Toronto, London Film Festival, SXSW, Cannes and other Oscar/Bafta accredited film festivals. This is an exciting project from a talented and ambitious crew, featuring up and coming talent.
Ties of the Ribbon was written as part of a bigger feature idea. Following the success of this short film, we plan to make this into a feature film, with our sights set on the BIG TIME.
How your support will help this project
What we have done?
We have come a long way since our initial ideas a couple of years ago and in that time we have completed the script, shotlist, storyboard, set design, and have assembled a fantastic crew and location.
How your funding works
Once you pledge an amount for the project, your funds won’t be deducted until the campaign is complete. You can always increase the donation once you have pledged, every little helps but you will need to do this before the Deadline otherwise they won’t count towards our goal. Just log back in click on the “Manage This Donation” button once you've contributed and logged-in again.
How your funding breaks down
To help us achieve the high production values we are aiming for, we have had to pull in a lot of favours.
The funding will cover both production with the equipment needed to achieve the look and a post-production facility to devise our high-end visual effects. The funding we are seeking is to cover the actual costs of the shoot and post production.
What happens if we don't raise our goal?
Kickstarter is ALL OR NOTHING fund-raising. If we don’t hit our target, even if we’re only £10 short, we don’t get to keep any of the money we raise. So we really need your support to bring this project to life.
Having spent many years working in the wonderful and creative field of filmmaking, Hax has honed his craft by taking a cinematic approach to storytelling through stunning visuals. He has a talent for injecting mood and atmosphere into his work, which will be key in creating the look.KOLA BELLO & CHRISTOPHER KETLEY - SOUND DESIGN

Risks and challenges
Every filmmaking project comes with it's own set of risks and challenges.
Tight production schedules and working to a strict budget around cast and crew availability.
We've managed to pull together a really great team of cast and crew members and have spent almost a year planning and prepping for this film.
The experience of the team has allowed us to be as best prepared for pitfalls and mishaps throughout the production.
Preparation, planning and flexibility are key to a successful shoot.
We are extremely confident that we are prepared for any complications that may arise through the production process from, shooting days, post production and distributing it to film festivals and our audience!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
