Working Together is a new documentary film exploring the experiences of Muslim Arabs who love living and/or working in Israel. We will interview a diverse cross-section of no less than 10 people in various cities and professions in order to feature the most interesting, heartwarming & inspirational true stories possible; paired with beautiful cinematic footage giving a glimpse into the life of each interview subject. Using subtitles, the story of each interviewee will be presented in his or her own words.
Why is this film important?
Today the global public is exposed to a staggering amount of misinformation about Israeli society; in terms of both interfaith relations and human rights. Working Together will dispel the most commonly held myths and showcase compelling examples of co-existence to document the true nature of this underreported narrative. The interviews we feature will present positive views of Israel in the context of not only employment & business opportunities, but also education, women's rights, security, health care, freedom of religion & expression and more.
How will the film be distributed- who will see it?
The aim of this film is not to profit; but rather to educate, entertain & inform the largest number of people possible. One of the benefits of documentary filmmaking is that footage can be edited & packaged in a number of different ways. Our aim is to create a full-length documentary film in cinema quality; suitable for submission to major film festivals. We also will release a series of short interview vignettes pulled from the film, to be shared online via social media. This will promote awareness of the film while being able to reach a wide international audience.
Why raise funds from the general public via Kickstarter?
By fundraising via Kickstarter, the film will remain truly independent and free from the strings often attached to traditional grants. It also provides an opportunity for those with strong feelings on the issue to make a meaningful difference; simply by financially backing this project. Additionally, the bulk of each dollar received will be spent in Israel and absorbed into the Israeli economy- providing a unique way to circumvent the growing anti-Israel boycott movement.
How will the funds be spent?
Fortunately, the costs to produce cinema-quality content have never been lower. We will be working with a small crew; not only to keep costs down but also to foster a warm & intimate dialog with each interview subject.
Below is a chart outlining how the funds raised on Kickstarter will be allotted:
If the project exceeds it's funding goal, how will excess funds be utilized?
In the event that this campaign exceeds it's funding goals, the extra funds will be spent to secure additional interviews, provide subtitles in multiple languages (such as Arabic, French, Spanish, Dutch, German etc), promote the film online, cover the costs to submit the film to additional film festivals, and create an overall better project with greater reach.
About the Production Team
In addition to my contributions, co-producer Boaz Fradkin has invested many hours into this project to date; including research into prospective interviewees as well as shooting the demo interview and B-roll shots. Boaz is a well-respected professional photographer based in Be'er Sheva; with clients both locally and also throughout Israel.
We will be joined by Andrew Deutchman, who has worked as Gaffer, Grip and Lighting Design for over 30 major productions; including television ads for broadcast & cable TV, as well as music videos. As a pro-Israel advocate, Andrew has taken part in multiple philanthropy & volunteer programs in the Metro Detroit area.
You can learn more about me personally on my Kickstarter bio; and I welcome anyone backing the project (or interested in backing it) to contact me directly! I would love to hear from you and look forward to interacting with other people who feel strongly about this project. By supporting this campaign, you're a part of the team!
The intro video above featured a demo interview- where can I see the video without the producer's intro?
Risks and challenges
This project began months before the creation of this Kickstarter project; when my co-producer and I refined the concept and message of the film. We have invested hundreds of hours of our time into the planning, research, coordination and in preparing interviews as well as demo material. We stand committed to seeing this project to completion. The Kickstarter campaign is intended to speed up the production in a way only external funding can; while maintaining creative and editorial independence. That said, while there are inherent risks in every endeavor, we have mitigated them to the best of our potential. This film will be completed regardless of any unforeseen setbacks; which at the worst would be a delay of a month or two in the reward deliverables.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
