We are House of Illustration – the only public art gallery in the UK dedicated to illustration and graphic arts.
In June 2017 we will open the first exhibition of the work of Jacqueline Ayer – a dynamic fashion illustrator who turned her hand to textiles, garment design and children’s books. A childhood friend of celebrated US graphic designer Milton Glaser, colleague of Andy Warhol, and founder of fashion company Design Thai, Jacqueline Ayer’s books were a unique addition to children’s literature in 1950-60s America and the UK. Her pictures brought a bold vision of Thai life to the western market, using pen and bright colours to document the back lanes of Bangkok.
We’d love to create the first catalogue of Ayer’s work to accompany the exhibition. As well as pages of gorgeous never-before-seen images, we already have introductory text from Milton Glaser about his childhood growing up with Ayer in co-operative housing (‘The Coops’) in the Bronx, ready to go to print. The catalogue will also include short essays from Hannah Webb, lecturer in Illustration at Anglia Ruskin University, and an interview with Ayer’s daughters Bet and Margot, as well as Jacqueline Ayer's unpublished autobiography.
We are a registered charity and often need to raise funds upfront in order to make a catalogue for our shows. We currently have 50% of the funding from Cambridge School of Art at Anglia Ruskin University, but need your help to make up the difference. Your support will enable us to showcase the work of this extraordinary artist for the very first time – and you get some wonderful merchandise in return too!
Book details: We will be printing a limited edition of 1000 copies. Each book will be 240 x 170mm, softcover (250gsm), PUR bound and digitally printed in the UK. We are also creating limited edition postcards, cotton tote bags, and a limited run of 50 screenprints on 270gsm smooth acid-free printmakers’ paper.
Risks and challenges
House of Illustration has been publishing catalogues to accompany exhibitions since we opened in 2014, and this will be our fifth.
We have the images, text and design ready for printing so just need the funding to be able to go ahead.
The catalogues, postcards, tote bags and print will be produced in the UK with companies we have worked with on lots of other projects.
We will be posting the rewards out as soon as the printed catalogue arrives at House of Illustration, so they can be with you on 15th June, the date of the opening of the 'Jacqueline Ayer: Drawing on Thailand' exhibition.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
