About this project
The Reaper Event is a new and different kind of zombie novel. A genetically modified virus known as Reaper is unleashed on the world after being stolen from a high security Russian military laboratory. After a horrific laboratory incident, American military researchers had deemed the Reaper virus too dangerous to be weaponized, but research on a vaccine was allowed to continue under severe security protocols. American intelligence learns that Russian scientists have created a weaponized version of Reaper, and a Russian laboratory technician in the covert employ of the CIA is tasked with acquiring a sample of the weaponized virus. During the operation, Reaper is accidentally released, turning most of the world’s population into cannibalistic killers that relentlessly hunt the uninfected.
The Reaper Event is told through the eyes of a smart and capable young woman named Riley Jenner. Riley’s mother is a virus researcher with USAMRIID, the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Maryland. Dr. Jenner supervises the vaccine research on Reaper, but she was previously involved with the Reaper weaponization project, something that Riley does not learn until after the virus escapes and devastates the world.
Riley and her mother are separated at the onset of the Reaper outbreak, when an Army Special Forces unit snatches Dr. Jenner from a remote hiking trail and rushes her back to Fort Detrick. The Reaper Event tells the story of Riley’s struggle to survive the zombie apocalypse and reunite with her mother. Along the way, Riley must also come to terms with the revelation that her mother may share responsibility for the virus that threatens to exterminate mankind.
If you are a fan of zombie literature, you know that precious few authors make any meaningful attempt to explain the origin of their zombies. Most make only a casual reference to some undefined infection, which is typically attributed to an equally undefined virus. A major difference of The Reaper Event is that the science behind the Reaper virus is described and explained. I created the Reaper virus based on actual characteristics of real-world medically significant viruses. The assumption that the Reaper virus can turn people into zombies is obviously invented, but everything else about Reaper is based firmly on biologic fact. Reaper’s origin, mode of transmission, and method by which it infects people are all scientifically correct. Reaper’s effects on the brain and the behavior it induces are also medically accurate. The Reaper virus is very different from any virus known in zombie literature.
The zombies of The Reaper Event are very similar to the slow and stumbling creatures well known to zombie fans. But these zombies are also very different. Zombies created by the Reaper virus retain a crucial part of their humanness, a quality that makes them infinitely more terrifying, and more than a little disturbing. They are also far more dangerous. A new type of more realistic zombie is about to be introduced to the genre. Readers will find the zombies of The Reaper Event not only well within the realm of the believable, but chillingly within the realm of the possible.
The process of publishing a book as an independent author is expensive. Your support will help pay for professional editing, cover art, interior design, publishing, and marketing. It is support from generous people like you that will allow me to complete this project. All funds will go toward making The Reaper Event the very best that it can be.
Here is a chart showing the estimated expenses for my project.
The final costs of rewards, postage, and Kickstarter fees will change slightly depending on the mix of rewards chosen. Publishing and editing fees are fairly fixed. Marketing expenses are flexible and can be adjusted as needed. I have allowed for reasonable variation and unexpected glitches, and I expect final project expenses to be very close to my estimates.
I gave a lot of thought to the rewards for my project. I wanted rewards that would be a good value, and I wanted to offer backers a creative and fun way to be involved in the project. Being a book project, the rewards naturally had to include copies of the book. I picked refrigerator magnets and coffee mugs as rewards because everyone likes them and we all use them every day. If you pick a reward that offers multiple magnets, you can immediately become the coolest friend ever by handing out a few Reaper Event magnets to your friends. Who would not want a nifty new magnet for their fridge? And even if you don’t drink coffee, the mug is awesomely cool for your hot chocolate or tea, or to hold your pencils or loose change.
The paperback edition of The Reaper Event will measure approximately 8 inches by 5¼ inches and will be about 275 to 300 pages in length. The Reaper Event refrigerator magnets measure 2 inches by 3 inches. The image on the magnets and the mugs is the same image used on this Kickstarter page. The mugs have the image printed on a glossy black 11 oz. ceramic mug. These magnets and mugs are really quite striking in appearance. They are not available for sale anywhere and they are exclusive to this Kickstarter project.
The $55, $75, and $90 rewards are the heart and soul of my Kickstarter campaign. Backers choosing these rewards can contribute something original that will influence the story, and these backers will have a say in how the story develops. Very few people can point to a novel and say that they named one of the characters, or that a story line or character was their idea
Participation at these reward levels is also an excellent way for backers to be involved in the project in an important way and receive recognition for their contribution without spending too much money. With these rewards the author is challenging backers to create a story idea or a character that has not been done before, and hopefully something that will amaze or shock the reader. I am very anxious to see what ideas you guys dream up.
No one gets left out. Each and every backer choosing these rewards gets a paperback copy of The Reaper Event – PLUS 3 super cool Reaper Event refrigerator magnets – PLUS the digital image of the Reaper Event logo. In addition, the backer who submits the selected name, story idea, or character idea gets 5 bonus copies of The Reaper Event to share with friends – PLUS a totally awesome Reaper Event coffee mug – PLUS 4 extra refrigerator magnets (for a total of 7 magnets – keep a couple for yourself and give one with each book you give away) – AND very special recognition in the book’s credits.
At the $300, $500, and $700 reward levels you are guaranteed that your character name, story idea, or character will be included in The Reaper Event. Your idea will not be compared to any other submission, but it is still subject to author approval.
At the $2450 reward level your donation will fund the full cost of publishing fees, editing, and marketing. You will get to create your own character, based on yourself if you wish, and you will collaborate with the author to write a scene that includes your character. In addition, you will receive generous recognition in the book’s credits, which will include a short biography of you. You also get a generous amount of rewards that you can give to friends as gifts to mark your achievement.
Hello new friends and potential supporters. I’m Joe, the author behind The Reaper Event. I live in the very small town of Kinder, Louisiana, where nothing much ever happens. When I’m not writing or planning for the zombie apocalypse, I enjoy historical research, exploring old abandoned places, and fishing. Since I’m writing a zombie novel, you might guess that I am also into zombies, horror, and science fiction.
My education and work experience are in the biological and medical sciences and law enforcement. I have a degree in nursing, and I worked five years in an emergency room. I have also completed extensive graduate study in biology, microbiology, and chemistry, and I taught human anatomy and physiology for eight years. In addition, I have a degree in law enforcement, and I worked as a police officer for five years. All of this amounts to the perfect preparation for writing a zombie horror novel.
Risks and challenges
I have already successfully published one book, so I am familiar with the process, and I do not expect any major publication issues with The Reaper Event. It is possible that the collaboration process could encounter a hiccup, but I do not expect any serious misunderstanding. I have been clear in describing the collaboration rewards, and I am very open-minded about working with others. I also want my backers to have a positive and fun experience. Also, I am hard-working, motivated, and very enthusiastic about The Reaper Event. Excepting serious personal illness or accident, or the arrival of the Zombie Apocalypse, I anticipate no hindrance to completing The Reaper Event on schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
