Our Team and the Zahn Innovation Platform
When we first started, we were actually calling our planners GRAPES Planners, named after the favorite tool. It wasn’t until after we won first place in the social enterprise track for the Zahn Innovation Challenge that "Cogtoolz" was born. We feel so fortunate to be part of the Zahn Innovation Platform Launchpad (ZIP Launchpad) at San Diego State University (SDSU). While there, we’ve been able to formulate and develop our company.
We have a great team that includes researchers, staff, students, and interns at San Diego State University. All of this would not be possible without such wonderful team members (past and present), who have been volunteering their time and who have simply been excited about Cogtoolz! It’s a team of people who love helping others!
- Christina - Founder/CEO
- Mike - Project Management and App development
- Katie - Graphic designer, recent SDSU grad
- Hillary - PR (of LA VIE EN PR), SDSU alumna
- Tiffany - Social media and writing, SDSU alumna in Public Health
- Amy - Research intern and social media, recent SDSU grad
- Bea - SEO and admin assistant
A special thanks to those who helped last summer to get Cogtoolz off the ground: Adrian, Sandy, Paddy, Gianna, Desiree, Brigette, and Kesha! We wouldn’t be here without your help and motivation!

How It All Started
Thank you for checking out our Kickstarter Campaign! I’m Dr. Christina Holub, Founder of Cogtoolz. Ever since I can remember, I’ve always had a passion for thinking of ways to help people improve health. Eventually, that led me to earn degrees in public health, focusing on social and behavioral sciences. I received a Master of Public Health at Yale University and PhD at UNC Chapel Hill. My particular love in public health is addressing health disparities and working with communities to develop health promotion strategies.
I started Cogtoolz back in March 2015 because I saw a need in mental health awareness and in making tools available to more people. The idea started earlier in the year when I was looking to go back to paper weekly planners. I knew that writing things down was a very powerful tool! Around the same time, I learned more about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) tools and how these tools can help improve mental health. That’s when the idea was born: Why not combine paper planners with these helpful tools?
As I started to search for more wellness tools, I realized that some of the best tools were hard to find and they were scattered across books, binders, journals, and websites. After talking to people, who regularly use these tools to improve their mood, I realized that I was on to something because the two things I heard most were: 1) I wish my wellness tools were all in one place and 2) when I forget to practice these tools, I don’t feel as good. That’s when I knew it was the right time to create this planner to help people remember to practice their wellness tools and make time for self care.
Ultimately, our goal is to help you feel more calm, confident, and content!
I am humbled by your support and I thank you for backing Cogtoolz!

Risks and challenges
Any type of production can be challenging, with potential unexpected delays. We have worked closely with our printer to ensure the fastest deliver time, but delays can happen.
Our company is based in San Diego, CA and we have worked with a local printer that has been in business for more than 40 years. Since it's local, we can get things rolling a lot faster! But, we can't forget about potential unexpected delays or hiccups. Once we hit our goal, we can start printing and will do our very best to get you your planner(s) shortly after the campaign ends.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
