Help us raise $6,000 to launch a festival showcasing Asian American artists as agents of change and exploring the meaning of “sacred.”
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
We’re the NYC-based Asian American Arts Alliance (aka “a4” as our cooler, hipper selves), and we believe that artists can change the world.
We’re raising $6,000 to launch Locating the Sacred, a 12-day festival that showcases artists as agents of change, demonstrating the power of art and culture to unleash imagination, break down barriers, and connect communities together for the greater good.
Artists will be matched with spaces—both traditionally and non-traditionally “sacred”—to help explore what sacredness means to all of us through dance, music, film, visual arts, and lots more.
Sounds great, right?
But we can’t do it alone.
Locating the Sacred will be launched this September with a “mini-series” of three events, just in time to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11. The full festival will take place in fall 2012.
To make the mini-series launch happen, WE NEED YOUR HELP—to cover artists’ fees as well as rental and production costs. Bloomberg Philanthropies has already given us their vote of confidence in this project.
So help us launch Locating the Sacred this fall! Every dollar helps, and we’ll show our gratitude with some exciting rewards.
Together, we can make a difference—and create a more tolerant, understanding and compassionate world.
Locating the Sacred is a 12-day festival produced by the Asian American Arts Alliance (a4) that will feature dance, music, film, visual arts, readings and high-level panel discussions in venues that are traditionally and non-traditionally considered sacred.
The festival is inspired by the events of 9/11 and brings attention to the challenges faced by Asian Americans since then, including the economic devastation of Chinatown in Lower Manhattan and racial tensions that have arisen due to fears and misunderstanding. Asian American artists are among those best placed to explore these challenges and explore ways forward.
By creating fresh and innovative avenues for critical civic dialogue about our collective experience and shared history as citizens of New York, Locating the Sacred aims to promote Asian American artists as brokers of the creative capital required for lasting change.
In anticipation of the festival, a4 plans to kick off the project with a mini-series of three events in September/October 2011. Working with partners, a4 will co-produce events that feature local Asian American artists creating or interpreting work on the theme of the sacredness of place, presented in traditional and unconventional sacred locations. In commemoration of the tenth anniversary of 9/11 and in the context of ongoing tensions in the city, the events aim to expand our thinking on the possibilities for creating personal and collective sacred spaces in New York City, and to signal the intentions of the full festival in 2012.
KICKSTARTER | AN EXPLANATION
