Dear past, present, and future supporters of my art. I'm happy to announce a brand new campaign for my latest dual CD and dual vinyl album release. Not only you'll be the first in line to listen to these tracks before anyone else can, but exclusively offered to my backers only, you shall receive additional perks with access to some of my live unpublished recordings from my summer touring of the EU in 2018 and 2019.
This dual album features over 90min of carefully selected music, arranged or composed by me, and recorded in a professional studio environment yet tracked live often using the first or second takes, with no overdubs.
The Wlosok/McGuirk/Riley Trio with Carly Johnson is a unique album for me in many regards. For the first time in my audio production history it will be released not only on a CD but also on a vinyl and for the first time I'm combing the art of vocal and instrumental music as a leader, which rendered new opportunities on how I accompany, arrange, and instrument each track.
There are many rewards to choose from ranging from $15 to many thousands. Some very specifically targeting my clients and friends in the recording arts area, some offering co-producer credits, and or guided visits of either historic Prague or Krakow - two beautiful cities in Central Europe with lovely architecture and rich music tradition and culture. Many higher priced rewards are greatly limited in quantity to ensure that I can fulfill my promises to all backers in a timely manner.

ABOUT THE RECORDING PRODUCTION
All my jazz CD album productions offer a combination of pro-composed and improvised jazz music and arrangements, recorded either in a professional studio setting or live, and mixed and mastered to half inch tape via analog means to provide each listener with the best quality sound today's recording industry has to offer while paying respect to the recording techniques developed in the past eighty years which still in my humble opinion haven't been surpassed by modern digital technology of today. As a result of this concept, it is my belief that all my albums have an unmistakable organic analog sound, which is both acoustically bold and dynamically broad and therefore exciting to listen to. It's been a true honor to work with John and Mike since 2006 (although sparingly, it is always a beautiful encounter) and I've been very lucky to have discovered Carly's talent and put it to great use in this production.
ABOUT MY MUSIC
Having been studying and practicing music extensively for the past forty plus years with major focus on classical (composition) and jazz styles (both composition and piano), it is my belief that my music represents my most inner-self. While some similarities with other artists or albums are likely to be encountered (as I listen to a lot of music for inspiration and active learning exercise), it has always been my goal to produce music which comes out of my own life experiences and helps us humans deal with daily struggles and challenges accordingly. This dual album represent two sides of my musical thinking. One which pays homage to the tradition of interpreting jazz standards in an organic yet respectful way and the other which is all about my own composing and expressing myself via original concepts and experimentation with harmony, melody, and rhythm.
ABOUT THE LABEL
Lukas Herink has been my longtime friend and classmate. We've known each other for over thirty years. Not only a great classical flutist and music educator in his previous career, but he also used to manage Czech Philharmonic Orchestra before settling with world-famous Ondrej Havelka's Original Syncopal Orchestra - a group he has managed and produced for the past twenty plus years, including scheduling steady performances on all five Continents and beyond. He brings brand new experience to this project and the fact he can help me produce a professional vinyl is a big bonus in my view. One of the reasons it took me longer to promote this album was to find a way to produce vinyl of it in addition to CD and my wish has been granted (with some patience). I'm very excited about Lukas taking on this new task and looking forward to our further cooperation and continuous friendship.
THE REWARD DETAILS
For those who have gotten to know me personally, I'm a man of many artistic interests. Besides offering things related to my music production in this campaign, such as this dual CD album production, private piano or composition lessons, solo/small group performance services at private events, composition commissions and collaborations, selected EU city guide and host, I'm also available as a mixing and mastering engineer, which is something I've been actively practicing for over twenty-five years now.
The MP3 tracks offered with the $15 reward are four-times higher quality then when purchased via iTunes or streamed online, so that you get your money worth. Also, you will never loose access to these unlike with some online streaming services out there. Lastly, you'll be the first to have access to my new release before anyone else does (well, except for my wife). Of course, for better quality listening experience there is a CD album option and some swear that a vinyl is even better sounding than a CD and I'm happy to say that this time I can offer this analog sound option as well, albeit it will take longer to produce and deliver given the largest World production facility of vinyls located near Prague in the city called Lodenice is some ten plus months behind schedule. In addition, for the first time I will give a chance to audiophile's to purchase 24bit/96kHz WAV files for the best listening experience out there. Those are equivalent to Super Audio CD or DVD-Audio releases of the past and highly recommended to those seeking the best possibly quality sound, albeit you will have to use a USB thumb drive or portable HD to play it through your home Hi-Fi audio system.
As far as my travel-guide offering services go, I spent enjoyable four days during July 2019 with a wonderful family from the US who selected a VISIT OF PRAGUE reward option during my last year's campaign. Therefore, I'm making myself available again as a guide and a photographer for the summer of 2020, either in Prague and Krakow (limited to two rewards each). Here is one of the pictures from our trip (used with their kind permission):
My mixing and/or mastering services are clearly explained in the reward section. On average these are discounted 20-25% over my standard year-round pricing, therefore a great value for those seeking my specialized reel to reel audio mixing and mastering services. It has taken nearly twenty five years of collecting and try-outs to gather the best sounding equipment I could get my hands on to produce top-quality audio tracks at my home for my own productions and now clients world-wide. Some of my mixing and mastering album work had helped win two best annual jazz album recording awards in Slovakia (some three years apart). If interested, here is a short example of what it looks like when mixing multi-track project using analog 1/2" tape:
ABOUT MY KICKSTARTER GOAL
There will be a limited number of CDs and vinyls available through Kickstarter and later on my website in the USA/Canada region at www.pavelwlosok.com. I will offer some MP3s to major carriers, such as iTunes, Amazon, CD-Baby in early 2020 once this drive is successfully over and all its backers have received their awards. My Kickstarter backers will be the first ones however with access to this dual album and getting additional tracks which will not be released online.
As I'm offering a dual-album and dual-vinyl option with nearly 90min of music this time around, here is a partial & approximate list of costs associated with each standard 60min+ CD album release.
- paying musicians. Musician's time and talent ought to be respected. Average studio musician receives about $300-500 per day-long studio session (six hours plus break).
- studio tracking/recording space/personnel logistics, editing, mixing, and mastering work. Often extra equipment is rented out and cost of analog tape is very high these days ($100 per 30min tape). For example, world-class mastering engineers charge $2,500 - $4,000 per CD project alone and that doesn't include any studio tracking, and mixing time/costs.
- paying for royalties and mechanical licenses for songs which are not originals (such as covers and featured artists compositions). For example cost of using one standard song with 1,000 physical CDs produced can be anywhere between $150-200. So, ten jazz standards younger 80 years will run at around $1,500 per release or will add $1,50 cost to each CD unit produced. This album uses a lot of covers as it pays homage to some of the music Billy Holiday, Ray Charles, Nat King Cole, and other greats.
- promotional expenses - there is no limit to how much money can one invest into promotion these days. Unfortunately, promotion is very expensive and very competitive business and without it, my music can hardly ever reach the audiences which it deserves. To get an agent who will get my music to be played by most radio stations, we are looking at $3,000+ per album on average. In addition, when I tour and take this music on the road, I must make sure that my musicians get paid accordingly. Given how expensive international travel these days is, without external support this is hardly possible to do.
- art design work, photography, printing and publishing rights, manufacturing of CDs and vinyls and paying my co-producer for his time putting it all together... with anticipated 300-500 CDs and 300+ vinyls (both being dual discs/plates) - well, you get the idea.
I'm putting a moderate $2,500 ceiling (about a third of the overall cost not counting any future promotion fees), which can be easily met with just two pro-audio reward backers. It is my hope to get closer to $5,000 because I believe this projects deserves wider recognition and for that targeted promotion must be invested into.
MY ULTIMATE THANKS TO YOU
With shared interest in the preservation and innovation of the original and truly American art form of Jazz and support for what I do as a musician, composer, arranger, and co-producer, I thank you for considering to support this project and wish you all a wonderful listening experience when it is delivered to your home near Christmas time. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to take advantage of having my trio consisting of world-famous Vanguard Jazz Orchestra drummer John Riley on drums and fabulous NYC acoustic bassist Mike McGuirk to my disposal again after many years and connect newly with extremely talented and original sounding vocalist Carly Johnson.
As I continue to master the art of music, composition, and improvisation as well as recording and mixing techniques, I shall seek new ways of expression through musical means in order to capture and share my own emotions and experiences as a husband, father of three, educator, photographer, music engineer, and foremost human being. Ultimately, contributing in my own way to the overall good of all humans is one of my primary tasks because this World needs more positive and beautiful energy, more independent thinking and compassion, and I shall continue helping in this regard, with your kind support, as long as I live.
Respectfully, Pavel Wlosok, September 2, 2019
Risks and challenges
There is very little to no risk associated with financing of this project at consumer's end simply because this dual CD release has already been recorded, edited, mixed, and mastered and is awaiting a release this Fall of 2019. The vinyl production will take some 8-10 months after the end of this campaign but all backers will have access to MP3s, CDs, and some to high resolution 24bit/96kHz audio files hopefully by this Christmas 2019 or by January 2020 at the latest.
Thanks again for supporting my music. Your support goes a long way!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
