- To realise the making of wondrous woodblock prints while sharing the story of our voyage with you!
We are going sailing with s/y Svartlöga from Aarhus to Tobago between August and December 2018. Our project is to describe the voyage in woodblock printed postcards!
We will produce 8 beautiful woodblock prints, inspired by locations and situations Svartlöga and her crew will encounter. Along the route we will send postcard to your letterbox. We are excited to describe and share the historical journey, in our own style.
Realising the goal
While sailing Svartloga we will be approximately 20 crewmembers, and a part from sailing, cooking, doing maintenance, glaring at the horizon and navigating we will make woodblock prints! We can only imagine carving woodblocks during stormy weather or chasing papers in the wind. With your support we can purchase the best materials, - cherry woodblocks, Japanese washi, quality pigments, shipping and packing expenses. We can even get some tickets home, and hadle all the preparation work before we sail!
We, Oscar Yran and Dina Lundvall Nielsen, met at the Funen Art Academy and went to Japan on an internship with Richard Steiner. We studied traditional Japanese woodblock printing for 4 months and fell in love with the process, the compact tools set and handcrafted techniques that is used to make everything from paper to colour to cutting and printing. It is amazing how a craft that is based on basic principles can make so vivid and complicated imagery! We formed the collaboration Trykkogeren that has made woodblock prints and releases since 2016.
We would be delighted to share our passion with you and tell the story of the voyage of Svartlöga!
Svartlöga is a special ship that holds a unique story. It started out as a minesweeper in the Swedish navy, witch swept mines in the Baltic Sea, during the cold war. The retired minesweeper is now own by Henrik Grønborg who, together with many volunteers, transformed the minesweeper into a sailing ship with top tuned, handcrafted upgrades.
70 crewmembers will take part in Svartlögas journey and everyone has taken part in upgrading her. We have been sailing and working on Svartlöga for the past 6 years. It is an amazing and challenging ship to sail and to be a part of the creative and free-minded atmosphere that inhabits her and every person that is onboard. Now after years of preparation Svartlöga will start her virgin voyage outside the Baltic Sea, sailing the North Atlantic Ocean for 15 months. Not as a Warship but as a FriendShip.
Finally our two passions meet and with your help we will create a adventurous story to share!
Thank you for your time!
Risks and challenges
Bad weather will cause delays. Both by exhausting us as crewmembers, and making printmaking near impossible. Luckily we will frequently visit harbours where if needed we can quickly catch up to our deadlines and re-supply materials.
Past experience on land tells us we can produce about 100 postcards a week. On this trip we have set a limit at 50 copies and 2 prints a month, witch gives us a lot of space in the calendar to reatch our goals.
Postal service is obviosly a big part of you recieving your print, and as we will deal with many contrys and different systems delays and prices may vary.
Quality materials from Japan, have alredy been ordered, but if they were to be lost or damaged with would have to be very creative, and tenacious to organise recieving them on the trip!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
