I am planning a nine month USA tour of one-man street theater, where I will perform various Shakespeare scenes as the `Speare Bearer. I will be doing the tour on my bicycle. I will pedal from major city to major city, town to town, into areas of local people, set up very quickly, and zealously bring to life a brief Shakespeare scene. I will play all the characters, present a vivid, entertaining story, then, just as quickly, pack up, and race off to the next town. Along the way I'll be blogging all my thoughts, adventures, mis-adventures, photos, and any video I can get a-hold of each day.
Projected cities on `Speare Bearers route:
New Orleans, LA
Baton Rouge, LA
El Paso, TX
Silver City, NM
Las Vegas, NV
Los Angeles, CA
San Fransisco, CA
Great Falls, MT
New York, NY
My director Jolie Tong and I are preparing a collection of Shakespeare scenes that fit our theme. The theme is the reckless pursuit of life, and the fear that humanity battles in that endeavor. Each scene will be a self contained piece where viewers will get an immediate Who What and Where, and see unfurling before them a lively, harrowing, gripping drama of Shakespearean proportions done by one lone, lunatic actor. Each the `Speare Bearer piece will leave in its wake a glittering affirmation of life, a downy cloud of its mystery, and a crackling argument for its breathless pursuit.
Shakespeare talked about relationships, grief, the pursuit of happiness, racism, war, life, death, fear. 400 years ago Shakespeare talked about all these things we are still fixated on with such complete deftness, clarity, and wit. But this alive, electric oeuvre is largely dead to us. It's a shame because Shakespeare wrote plays for us, the rich and the poor, the PHD's and the illiterates. His plays are for aching, awe-struck, mirthful, broken, warm-blooded, human hearts. They are meant to be performed, not read silently to ones self in 10th grade English. They are meant for the people. This is what the `Speare Bearer is about.
I am plotting a course of the major cities and smaller towns I'll be hitting along my trip. In January I will embark from Tallahassee, FL on my bike. I will ride west across the southern coast, north up the coast of California, and once I hit Washington State late spring, I'll head back east along the northern coast, to arrive back in New York City in Sept.
I love performing, and I love adventure, and performing is never more an adventure than when you are fervidly engaging with Shakespeare. His words are so vital and crackling with electricity. They constantly remind me that life is worth living daringly and abundantly. All I want to do is hop on my bike and race off and proclaim that to others. I'm just mad about the idea and I'd really appreciate your help.
