First a bit of background - PPMtv is the only Public Access Television station serving the seacoast area of New Hampshire. We're 8 years old and have a viewership of approx. 70,000 on a monthly basis.
We also distribute some of our programming to other Public Access Stations across the country. PPMtv has an annual budget of just under. $150,000. This supports our staff of 1.5 people - pays the rent and keeps the lights on. So, you can see, our money is tight to say the least.
We have a volunteer staff of 3 who work in our programming department - it's their job to make sure that all the programs we produce or acquire are scheduled on the computer to play at the right times and on the right days.
Here's the problem: When the station was originated, the computer system installed to play all of our programming worked well for our needs. At that time, we were airing programs only from 8am to 6pm Monday thru Friday. Today, because of the popularity of the station we air programming 24/7/365 and the computer system simply can't handle the work load. The best way to explain it is that the current system can only play one video file format - the .MPG2 format. Ninety percent of all the programming we acquire comes to us in other formats such as .mov or .avi or .mp4 or one of several others. In order for us to air these programs they must all be converted to .MP2 format. This process is very time and labor intensive and often makes it impossible to get all the programming on air - on time.
What we at PPMtv are planning to do with our Kickstarter funds is purchase a new system that will solve this issue. There are a number of programming systems, for television stations like ours, that will handle ALL video formats. With one of these systems in place, we will be able to end the need to convert files before scheduling them for broadcast. The current program has some other issues which create a tremendous amount of excess work as well - such as each individual program must be placed in the schedule manually. The new programs will allow you to place it once and then assign it to time slots across the schedule rather than placing each show time and time again. With a new system in place, additional time will be freed up allowing our programmer the opportunity bring more interesting and diverse content to the PPMtv viewership.
PPMtv is the 'voice of the seacoast' and allows the public an opportunity to express their views, teach others about their passions and communicate with the community on a broad basis. Without a new programming system, we'll be unable to grow this very important and appreciated community service. PPMtv' Kickstarter campaign is a part of a match funding process. The cost of the new equipment is $27,000. We have a matching grant opportunity that will supply us with $15,000 if we can raise $12,500. We currently have $2,500 in the bank so our Kickstarter request is for $10,000 to cover the balance needed to move us forward. Many thanks for your interest and dedication to PPMtv. We hope you'll take the opportunity to invest whatever you can to help us make or exceed our goal and keep PPMtv on the air, alive and vibrant.
