About this project
As a self-supported cycling documentary crew, we five storytellers will pedal 18,000 miles, from Alaska to Argentina, filming the vast array of diverse cultures and landscapes we encounter along the way. WITH THE HELP OF YOU, OUR PEDAL SOUTH COMMUNITY, we will produce a feature length documentary covering all 18 months of the journey. We will also create and regularly post short multimedia pieces from the road, sharing the stories of those we meet as well as our own personal tales in this life-changing adventure.
- THE ROUTE
It begins in the Arctic. We’ll fly in to the oil-field town of Prudhoe Bay, on the northern coast of Alaska, and immediately set off down the untamed gravel road of Dalton Highway. 18,000 miles, fourteen countries, two years and one entire hemisphere later we’ll coast into the southern tip of South America at Ushuaia, Argentina, the ‘fin del mundo’--'the end of the world.'
We’re riding with no support vehicles of any kind because quite often we’ll be forced to take trails completely impassable by car. We’ll also be racing the seasons the entire way. Done just right, we’ll go hand in hand down the Pacific coast with a year and a half long summer. Fail to keep up, then we’re caught, frozen, by the unforgiving Patagonia winter.
Here you can see a map of our route:
Our goal is to celebrate, connect, and inspire the Americas--North, Central, and South--by creating what we call a ‘cultural roadmap’. Throughout our journey we will utilize our skills in writing, photography, and filmmaking to share stories from the road of unique individuals up and down the Western Hemisphere.
Using this innovative interactive map, we want to empower you, the Pedal South community, to take your own adventure through our content. You'll be able to follow our journey in a dynamic way, to explore an area yourself by opening stories, photos, and videos pinned down to the exact locations they originate from. The destinations of our route will be represented by the interactions and experiences we have there, and we want you to take them in at your own pace, heading off in whatever direction you decide.
- THE FILM
While our regular updates from the road will focus on telling the stories of the inspiring and unique people we come across, the film will provide the more intimate, behind-the-scenes look at our journey. Our own story will mold with and be shaped by those stories of others we’re telling as we take up roles in front of and behind the lens.
The film also will portray our personal and group struggles as we face and overcome the countless hardships of the road. We want our film to glorify the great moments, dissect the challenging ones, and, all in all, depict life on the road as honestly as possible.
BECOME A BACKER
We have been working to make this ride possible for about four years now, and we are SO CLOSE to being ready! By becoming an official backer of Pedal South, you will help us purchase our last remaining necessary film and camping gear, pay off our lawyer and administrative fees, and keep us clothed and fed for the duration of the trip. We are now ready to make the commitment, to leave behind our current careers and loved ones for up to two years in pursuit of making this project possible. And if you’re interested at all in the outcome of the journey, in our progress, we hope you can commit to just a one-time donation to help make it all possible.
Also, all donations are tax deductible! We have teamed up with media production non-profit Students of the World, who are fiscally sponsoring our project.

Risks and challenges
Over the course of our journey we will endure many challenges, most potentially unseen. There's no way we can predict when a bear might attack or when a careless driver will zoom by closer than is safe, but we will do everything in our power to prevent such occurrences by adhering to strictly set safety rules before the trip even begins. Also, we are training for and planning ahead of time exactly what recovery measures must be taken to minimize the damage caused by an unforeseen accident.
We're confident in our abilities to handle the prevention and recovery of all such accidents common (and rare) to cycling, as we already have an immense amount of experience with distance cycling. We feel equally, if not more, confident with our knowledge of and experience with camping related accidents.
Damage to or malfunction of camera gear is a potential worry, but one we will plan ahead for by keeping a round of backup gear ready to be delivered if need be. Also, our three filmmakers all have experience working with high quality camera gear in rough outdoor conditions, and we are confident in their ability to keep the gear in tip top working order regardless of our environment.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
