About Index 0
Index 0 is a recording of new experimental music by Elizabeth Adams, Jack Callahan, Beau Sievers, Andrew C. Smith, and K.C.M. Walker.
The compositions are performed by violin duo String Noise—Conrad Harris and Pauline Kim Harris—with violist Dov Scheindlin and cellist Brian Snow. They’re current and former members of the Arditti Quartet, FLUX Quartet, S.E.M. Ensemble, and the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, with decades of new music experience. Simply put, they’re some of the best musicians we know in New York.
Principal recording for the project has already been completed. We worked with engineer Alexis Berthelot at Studio G in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Funds from this Kickstarter campaign will be used to master and manufacture the record itself. We’re going to master the record with our friend Joe Branciforte in Brooklyn. The record will be pressed on transparent 150 gram double-vinyl at EKS Manufacturing, also here in Brooklyn. The records will be shipped in letterpress printed sleeves designed by artist Joanne K. Cheung.
While planning Index 0, we discussed how to sustainably fund future projects like this one. We decided we would form a cooperative for experimental musicians and composers, pooling our collective resources in support of each others’ projects. We want to ensure that Index 0 is fully funded so we can put profits toward establishing this organization and funding its projects.
- Elizabeth Adams - CUSP (the music for the noise)
- Jack Callahan - Edge of Intention (I)
- Beau Sievers - Distance Etudes I, II, and IV
- Andrew C. Smith - Topology (phases of this difference) & (contriving balance)
- K.C.M. Walker - precessional
We're two weeks away from the end of our campaign, and we wanted to add images of the prints by Joanne K. Cheung for backers at the $250 level.
There are ten unique 8" x 10" silver gelatin prints in the numbered series, two of which are pictured here. Each print is made from a drawing on vellum based on an alphabetic fragment. The photographic process inverts the opacity of the drawing, turning lines into lights.
Risks and challenges
Most recording projects face challenges in their early stages: composition, recording, and mixing. These have all been completed. All we need to do is master the record, manufacture it, and send it to you.
It's possible that there could be problems or delays with manufacturing, or that if we get enough funding we'll decide to make some additional recordings. We may also make some changes to the track listing given above. If we make any changes to our plans or face challenges above and beyond what we anticipated, we'll post updates here.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
