WE DID IT!!!!!! Thanks to 550 backers we have reached our initial funding goal of $50,000!!! We still have a few days to go, so our stretch goal is $60,000. This extra funding will allow us to get further in to production, conduct more important interviews and get closer to completing the film!
ME TOO. TIMES UP. HOW DO WE MOVE FORWARD?
Statistics show at least 1 in 3 women experience some form of harassment or unwanted advances at work - and those are just the reported cases. In October 2017, over 12 million women and men contributed to the #METOO outcry on social media unmasking an endemic issue that spreads across all industries, as well as all genders, ages, races, and socio-economic statuses. We are at an unprecedented time in history. We need action and solutions.
NEVERTHELESS is a documentary that examines the sexual harassment crisis in the American workplace through interviews and personal stories that recount experiences and reveal truths about the intricacies of the issue as a whole. It also shines a critical light on tools and solutions for everyone to use inspired by this watershed moment in our country’s history. The documentary touches upon several topics surrounding harassment and assault in the workplace in order to point towards a brighter future.
NEVERTHELESS is a documentary about how we got here as a society and how we are going to move forward. It's up to all of us to solve this problem.
MEET THE FILMMAKER
Hi! I'm Sarah. I've had a camera in my hand since I was a teenager, it is truly the greatest tool at my disposal, and I am so grateful to be a filmmaker. I have dedicated my career to telling stories that uplift, inform, and inspire and showcase strong female role models on screen. NEVERTHELESS is my third feature-length documentary, and I am one of the millions of women who wrote #MeToo when the Weinstein story broke because of my personal experiences of harassment when working in the television industry. Those moments made me feel small, insignificant, and powerless.
I believe in the power of cinema to change the world, and I know NEVERTHELESS has the potential to inform the public, inspire change within workplaces, and bring us together as a society to work towards fixing this endemic problem.
What and who will NEVERTHELESS include?
“Women who have been in the workplace since Rosie the Riveter have been dealing with this entrenched male sexism.”
Topics include: the HISTORICAL side and how far the US has come since the landmark Anita Hill case in 1991 and women entering the workforce as far back as World War II. What was it like for women in the workplace at that time and how much have we advanced? We will interview historians and experts in this space.
“When girls are brought up to be polite and quiet it's that much harder for them to step out of that role.”
In addition, the film will examine the SOCIAL side of the issue and how gender roles from a young age can be damaging for both boys and girls when fast forward to normative behaviors in the workplace. What if girls were taught to be assertive from a young age so that they could comfortably stand up for themselves at every age? Why are we teaching our boys to feel entitled, and inherently more valuable than girls? We will interview a social psychologist and film training sessions that young women go through to become more assertive with Sexual Harassment Training Expert Lauren Roselle.
“These confidentiality agreements and arbitration provisions go hand in hand in silencing women. It’s just a rigged system.”
The LEGAL side of sexual harassment is where we find one of our calls to action. Victims of harassment are often silenced due to confidentiality clauses and mandatory arbitration agreements in employment contracts. So even when a woman has the bravery to come forward and share her experience, why isn’t our legal system set up to support her? What would it look like if these legal battles weren’t shrouded in secrecy so the perpetrators faced real consequences - as their victims do? The film will follow the people on the front lines of the battle on Capitol Hill fighting to change these laws and practices as well as politicians on the state level like Senator Connie Leyva of CA. We will also set up a round table discussion with Human Resource Representatives to hear stories and uncover the truth of their roles at most companies.
“When we look at sexual harassment we also have to look at toxic masculinity which serves nobody and hurts everybody.”
And finally, the MASCULINITY side of this issue is closely considered. We look at men leading the charge in this space like Activist Dale Thomas Vaughn, who speaks to men across the country about how to show up for women and be their allies. What is this concept of toxic masculinity and how does it negatively affect both men and women and breed a culture of harassment? How can we include men in this conversation and show them how to be allies instead of sitting on the sidelines? #METOO captured the victim’s side of the story, but this isn’t a women’s issue as the perpetrators are largely male – this is truly a men’s issue. We will be interviewing Author and TED Speaker Michael Kimmel as he works to inform and empower men to stop being bystanders.
The film will interweave these topics with personal stories of men and women dealing with harassment in many forms across the US as well as lawmakers and activists fighting to make a difference for future generations.
The tone of the film will be informative and educational, encompassing as much of the harassment experience as it spans across all industries and income levels, but ultimately it will have an uplifting message and concrete calls to action as well as serve as a jumping off point for conversations post-screening. The film aims to be a tool for change and progress, not to serve as an expose on any one person or entity.
What will the money go towards?
I am currently in early production on NEVERTHELESS. The money raised on Kickstarter will go towards production costs. It will fund equipment rentals, travel costs, studio rentals and crew in order to film several more interviews. We truly couldn't do this without your help! We need to maximize on the timeliness of this issue. We will be applying for grants and seeking private donors and corporate sponsors to raise the rest of the budget. We hope to complete production in 2018 and move on to post-production in 2019.

Risks and challenges
Every documentary project comes with risks and challenges but this is my third feature-length documentary project so I have a general idea of the struggles I will face along the way. My biggest challenge in this process will be to find a way to tackle such a vast subject matter and make sure people on all sides of this issue feel heard and seen. I will need to be unbiased, and be able to check my blind spots when necessary. I will be open, curious and learning throughout my journey to make this movie and I am fully committed to making sure it is completed and creates the change we are all hoping for.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
