With the campaign coming to a close in less than 24 hours I just want to thank you all again so much for your generous support and excitement for this project. There will be so many photos and updates to come as Little Free Libraries funded by this project find their homes in deserving communities locally and nationwide ("like" www.facebook.com/littlefreelibrarync)! If you're just happening upon this project and are inspired to donate, I do want to let you know of two other Little Free Library projects on Kickstarter that are ending soon and could use your help (see below). Thank you!
**Even more updates!** I was contacted by a community that was hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. The local public library was destroyed and may not be rebuilt because the area is now considered too "high-risk" for new construction. I'm hoping to hand deliver at least one Little Free Library to this community and help them decorate and install it together. There are lots of other unique and deserving homes for LFLs also in the works!
So many heartwarming stories and so much potential for community impact- this really is that "spirit" of sharing I found so special in this project. Thank you again for helping me spread that magic!
**EXCITING NEW UPDATES! (see video below)**
"Like" the local Little Free Libraries NC Facebook page for pictures and videos of the project as it progresses!
**UPDATE** With the incredible support from you all we will now be "spreading the magic" in a much MUCH larger way than I had originally expected! This is amazing. Stay tuned as I reach out to my community, the Little Free Library nonprofit and beyond to develop ideas on how to best honor the incredible support I have received! THANK YOU!
The Little Free Library project began in 2009 when Todd Bol built a small structure, a glorified birdhouse if you will, and filled it with books in honor of his late mother, a school teacher and avid reader. He placed the structure on his front lawn with a sign encouraging curious visitors to "Take a Book. Leave a Book." The spirit of the project, which aims to promote literacy and community, spread quickly and today there are an estimated 10,000 libraries nationally and even internationally (click here to see a map!). Right now there are no registered Little Free Libraries in Winston Salem NC so let's change that!
I'd love to bring at least one (but envision several if possible!) Little Free Library to the Winston Salem area.

How you can help:
Your donations, no matter how large or small, will help fund the construction costs, the non-profit registration fee of the Free Little Library, the books and maintenance. I've set the fundraising goal for $175 (which based on my calculations will fund at least one LFL) but support does not have to stop there! Funds above my goal will support a growing book collection and additional Free Little Libraries for the Winston Salem community.
Your suggestions for books and locations are welcomed. The Little Free Library is not an old-book donation site but a sharing hub for books that moved you, inspired you, made you laugh, made you misty, made you think or all of the above. If you've read a book you loved, let me know or donate a copy! While I have several community locations in mind, they will not be set in stone until I am confident the project will get off the ground. If you know an individual, family or organization that would be willing "host" sites for a library please let me know! Parks, community cafes and coffee shops, YMCA's, etc. would all be great locations.
Your involvement in the project is essential to its success. Take a book. Leave a book. Return the book you took so someone else can enjoy it. Leave a note in a book. Leave a handwritten secret in one of the Post Secret books I plan to include in the collection. Post a picture of your LFL visit on the Facebook page. Let me know if a collection is running low or if the structure is being misused. This project promotes literacy but what makes it so special is the shared spirit behind it. Connect with our community.
So many thanks!
How Donations Work:
Make a pledge of any amount and when prompted, enter your billing information. Your card will not be charged unless the project reaches the $175 goal within the 30-day window I have set. Backers will also be thanked personally by me in the unique ways listed on this page. Thank you, thank you, and thank you again!

Risks and challenges
On the FAQ section of the Free Little Library's website someone asked "Won't someone steal the books?" The organization simply replied "You can't steal a free book." While this is true, one of the challenges of this project may be a dwindling book collection or vandalized structures (as much as we hate to think people would do that). My hope is that community involvement, carefully selected locations and trust in the honor system will curb this risk. Help me care for our Free Little Library and keep me posted on its status!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
