New iPhone Bonus Plan

Posted by Michael Rondinelli (Creator)

There has been endless rumor and speculation about the next iPhone. Apple has not released any official information about a new version of the iPhone, so unfortunately features, size and other changes are just that, speculation. Today, we have no actionable information to go on to say if today's GoPano micro is compatible, nor to work on a new version that would be.

There is justifiable concern about GoPano micro compatibility with a new iPhone, and the simple answer is we don't know any more about it today than we did 4 months ago. However, since many expect a new model announcement within weeks, we have a contingency plan to support our Kickstarter backers for what may come.

The following is a non-binding draft of that plan. Our goal is to preserve the monetary value of your original contribution. We intend to match the spirit of the draft below based on what (if anything) is released by Apple in the coming weeks. As soon as an official announcement is made and we have reviewed the technical details of any new product(s), we will introduce the final bonus plan.

The GoPano micro New iPhone Bonus Plan (DRAFT)

Apple is speculated to release a new model of the iPhone by October 31, 2011 ("New iPhone"). In that event, EyeSee360 will offer our Kickstarter backers who were rewarded with one or more GoPano micro optics a Bonus. The bonus offered will depend on the circumstances of the new iPhone:

A New iPhone which requires only a new case for GoPano micro to function:

  • We will send out a new iPhone case for free, at our expense, to any Kickstarter backer who requests one.
  • One Bonus case will be offered for each GoPano micro optic rewarded to the Backer.
  • Cases will be sent once they have been manufactured.

A New iPhone requires substantial re-tooling or redesign of GoPano micro for compatibility:

  • The Backer will receive a discount to the GoPano web store, good towards purchase of a new GoPano micro model compatible with the New iPhone.
  • One discount will be granted for each GoPano micro rewarded the Backer.
  • The discount will be at a minimum either $40 (USD) or 50% off the retail price of the new product.
  • Backers will be responsible for the shipping costs of the new order.
  • Backers of $200 or more will receive 1 new GoPano micro model for the New iPhone upon request, for only the cost of shipping.
  • Beta Tester backers will receive upgraded GoPano micro models under a separate agreement.
  • No trade-in is necessary. Backers keep any GoPano micros for iPhone 4 they have already.

General Terms and Conditions:

  • Bonus is offered only to fully paid-up backers of record for the Kickstarter GoPano micro project.
  • Bonuses offered under this plan are non-transferrable and will be valid only for the email address provided at time of fulfillment.
  • Bonus applies only to a New iPhone product announced by 31 October 2011, and must be a clear successor to the iPhone 4,
  • If Apple releases multiple, substantially different iPhone products by 31 October 2011, EyeSee360 reserves the right to only provide compatibility for one of those models under this agreement.
  • Bonus must be redeemed by 31 December, 2011.
  • No commitment can be made at this time towards a delivery date for Bonus products.
  • This Bonus program will be considered null and void under the following circumstances: 1) If no New iPhone products are released by Apple by 31 October 2011, 2) If a New iPhone works as-is with GoPano micro, 3) If a New iPhone is fundamentally incompatible with the GoPano micro for any reason (for instance, due to lack of a camera module).

Jeff, the case was designed to fit either the GSM or CDMA iPhone 4. The 4S is just like the CDMA iPhone 4, so the case will fit just fine.

    2. J.G. on

So since the GSM iPhone 4 is different from the iPhone 4S. Does this mean owners of GSM iPhone 4 get an additional case per request? See photo and link.

Has anyone tested the lens with the new iPhone 4S?

So now that the iPhone 4S has been announced and has same form factor there will be no need for a new iPhone case and hopefully the lens will still work with it.

Wow that is amazing news! As for the negative and positive comments. That just comes with it. 360 grew from a bunch of guys to a full fledged company, that never goes without it's teething problems and as any parent knows, teething problems hurt for everyone involved ;)

But, what about the original, shipment, is the end of September and no shipment.

This plan is extremely fair, and should be taken the spirit it's offered, with a personal humility and generosity of spirit. I can't add much to the well-reasoned comments above that point out that Kickstarter is not a store - it's a funding platform. These are regular (if quite talented) people asking for our faith and help directly to make their visions come true, and we supported the idea along with taking the risks as investors. That means dealing with delays and the inevitable bumps as a vision goes from concept to product, with all of the unforeseen minutiae and delay. I applaud Mr. Rondinelli and the team for trying to ease the effects of the process through a creative approach like this plan. To me, this justifies my support of the project even more - not less.

What Mike Said + another 1. If I were on the staff at GoPano working my butt off developing the micro I'd certainly be more than a little pissed off at some of the comments I'm reading here, especially that sarcastic vitriol from Butow Maler a day ago. Just sit tight and chill out, you'll get your optics when they're ready and not before.

I do understand the disappointment some folks are feeling - I had hoped, based on the original timetable, to have the lens in time for the last ever shuttle launch since I had tickets to watch from the causeway. And now I have a 12-day cruise and would have loved to have the lens with me then as well. I don't think it was unreasonable to expect a company that already sold a similar products for SLRs would have a good idea of how long the entire process would take, but what can you say, hindsight is 20/20. One thing people seem to forget is that the whole premis of Kickstarter is to start new businesses/projects and ventures, and as a reward, you often get to be the first with a new item. The reward is great, but the principle is encouraging development and production, not mail order shopping. Kickstarter is not a store, it's an idea. Some projects succeed, some fail and a few take a wee bit longer to get everything right. And, frankly, it may turn out when all is said and done, that the camera and lens quality makes this only a novelty anyway. You pays your money and you takes your chances.

You're making iPhone 5 plans? This whole thing sounds more and more like a joke for me. Right now i'm only waiting for the next apology why you still can't ship. Someone's cat died? Perhaps you should better make plans for the iPhone 6? I know, Apple didn't said anything about it yet, but i'm sure they'll publish it in 2012. Maybe this is a realistic date to get the optics to your backers?

    12. Ben Slater on

Hey guys :) Don't get too down about the new iPhone situation, even if people upgrade to the new phone they will still have the old 4 kicking around for use with your cool toy! :)

    13. Dean Flory on

Sounds like a fair deal. It's unfortunate some commenters have no idea of the production process, especially when it comes to working with Chinese manufacturers. I worked for home decor company in product development. I'll never forget when our first samples of inflatable ghosts came back...all pink! This process takes time and we're all coming in at the very beginning. If you don't have patience and aren't interested in helping good ideas see the light of day, then kickstarting isn't for you.

Your inability to ship has soured the whole Kickstarter plan for me. Never again.

Thank you I was hoping when I upgraded it wouldn't be obsolete.

I think the offer is quite fair. But, did you consider the option of allowing us to defer receipt of the I4 version and apply some value to the I5 version?

If it is as simple as a new case then this would probably be unnecessary.

I look forward to getting mine for the Iphone 4. If it works as advertised then if I end up getting a 5 I will get new one for the 5

As a Backer, I knew the risks I was taking when I decided to support your idea. What you are doing is has never yet been done. Such exploration necessarily involves risk and inevitably unforeseen challenges. Such challenges can lead to delay. I knew this from the beginning, and in my opinion so should anyone who invested in your idea.

Your offer is extraordinarily fair, and I am grateful for your kindness. Keep up the terrific work!
