So here’s the deal…
We started this thing with nothing, from scratch... from a frustration, a passion, and need to change a few things about the food we find on our shelves. A good loaf of bread has a lot of strength, and we intend to enhance our community--and then some--simply through the ideal that delicious, wholesome food should be accessible.
We’ve landed in Bed Stuy on a mission and the pieces seem to fit better here than any other place we’ve tried. We’re modest but confident, we love what we do, and we rock a new, better form of business that invests in its surroundings, builds community around common interests, and breaks bread with its neighbors.
So here’s the nuts and bolts... Why we’re here and asking for your help... This brand was built with 5 grand, 18-20 hour days, 7 days a week, a one-man operation for about a year. It got us fans, love affairs, clients, partners, and lots of smiling amazing people... We’ve gone through four shared kitchens since we started, and two days before SCRATCHbread was homeless this summer, an angel swept through and allowed us the few extra bucks needed to secure a home for the next ten years.
We’ve now got our new home and the demand for our goods, plus the know-how, ideas, and plans to contribute to our community, but we’re shy on some resources. We need to upgrade our tools to make our new space work. This means worktables, ventilation system for our wood burning oven, bread cooling racks, pastry tools, refrigeration, and especially a great set of wheels to get our stuff to those who want it.
We’re asking for community help here because we want to create a business that is not bottom-line driven. The tools and equipment you help us get will feed the next steps that are at the heart of SCRATCHbread’s operations, the side of things that we really want to dig our hands into: opening a walk-up whole-sale retail window for the neighborhood and developing an internship program for local teens. There’s something powerful about the life of a loaf of bread—it’s just four ingredients, and it’s amazing how much you can do with so little. We’ve learned this ourselves, and it’s a great perspective for kids to be surrounded by, plus solid hard work and empowerment gives confidence… and if there is one thing we’ve always wanted to give, aside from delicious food, it’s tools to build confidence.
We’re looking to raise $25,000 and we’ve created some cool kickbacks for your support (and we’ll consider you a family member for life with your pledge). Help provide the tools for SCRATCHbread to grow and I guarantee, whether you’re in Missouri, Chicago, California, New York, or even Jersey, you’ll eventually feel the results of our hard work.
Thanks & cheers.
p.s. enjoy this video by the amazing Liza of Food Curated from SCRATCHbread’s early days of baking in the off hours of a Brooklyn pizza joint—we’ve got a wood-burning oven in our new space but can’t use it until we upgrade the ventilation system. Please help!
