BEYOND THE DIVIDE - July 2014 Update

Posted by Jan Selby (Creator)

Hello wonderful backers!!

It’s been a long time since an update. We’ve been working diligently on so many aspects of getting the film out into the world. Now it’s time to share good news with you!

FILM FESTIVALS! We are excited to announce that BEYOND THE DIVIDE (BTD) is an official selection at two upcoming film festivals! We will premiere at DOCUTAH (a.k.a. the Southern Utah International Documentary Film Festival) in beautiful St. George, Utah on September 3rd. Two weeks later, BTD will screen at the Global Peace Film Festival in Orlando, FL, September 16th to 21st. We are awaiting responses from many other festivals over the next few months. If you use Facebook, please be sure to "like" our page to see photos and updates from the festivals!

COMMUNITY SCREENINGS NATIONWIDE The immediate “big vision” for BEYOND THE DIVIDE is to lay the foundation for community screenings throughout the country over the next few years, with particular focus around Veterans Day/Armistice Day (11.11.14). A core component is an exciting relationship with Gathr, an L.A.-based new type of independent film distribution partner that will make it possible for anyone in the U.S. to bring BTD to a theater to create an event in his or her local community. (Non-theatrical community screening licenses will also be available.) Details will be available in August/September. Sign up at to be one of the first to learn about hosting a BTD event in your community!

STRATEGIC GATHERINGS In addition, BEYOND THE DIVIDE has been selected to screen at two private national gatherings. This Thursday, July 24th, BTD will be screened at the Veterans For Peace National Convention in Asheville, NC. Then on October 17th, the Peace & Justice Studies Association has included a screening of BTD on the opening day of their Annual Conference in San Diego. These are wonderful opportunities to reach out to individuals who may be inspired to host a screening back home. (This is just the beginning of the networking we’ve been doing with organizations whose missions align with themes in the film.  If you have contacts at national offices of peace/veteran/conflict resolution organizations, please let me know. Thanks!)

KICKSTARTER REWARDS Thank you for your patience in receiving some of your Kickstarter rewards! If you are eligible to receive a download of the film, expect to get an email in September. DVDs will take more time, since we are still creating the bonus material. They will definitely be available by the end of the year, as will the original music soundtrack. Please remember that your copies of the film will be for personal use only and not for public screenings

A SURPRISE FROM CHRIS KOZA Composer/Singer/Songwriter Chris Koza has created an incredible soundtrack for BEYOND THE DIVIDE. It’s emotive and memorable. One day in April, I received an email with a surprise gift from Chris - a new song entitled “Beyond the Divide”. This will be the only song on the soundtrack with lyrics and it will accompany the final credits (where your names will be listed!). Hearing his incredible voice sing these powerful words is the perfect way to end the film. As a small thank you for believing in the film and our team, here’s an early glimpse at the lyrics.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

Beyond the Divide by Christopher Koza

I swear to God you’d see it a circle on the mountain there
looking down from everywhere
dividing a town in two
and somewhere on the road less traveled where we met
I saw something in you despite the differences

Beyond the divide, we’re the same kind

I stumbled through the missteps
searching for a better way
everyone has something they need to say
and the view gets pretty grey
and I’ve been waiting for this moment to arrive
to see the enemy and who they are inside
slowly to realize that through these wretched miles
we meet together in the fog of denial

Beyond the divide, we’re the same kind
Beyond the divide, we’re the same kind
