About this project
The Latest News!
After funding in SIX HOURS and we reached EVERY Stretch Goal the biggest question has always been about purchasing multiple copies. And now you can!
That's right! You can get additional copies of the Puzzle Keyring through this campaign for $30 each, plus a bit extra in shipping. Those of you in the US will need to add $3, while I can send extra copies around the world for an additional $10.
In order to add extra copies to your pledge, you will need to adjust your pledge level. Hit that big "Manage Your Pledge" button at the top of the page! Next, you'll see a "Change Your Pledge" button. You'll then be able to manually chance your pledge amount! US backers can add $33 for each copy and international backers can add $40.
We broke through every one of these Stretch Goals! This Puzzle Keyring is just going to get better and better!
The Puzzle Keyring currently contains fifteen ciphers like Semaphore, Braille, Atbash, and Pigpen. But there are plenty more methods that can be condensed down to a single card. Resistor codes? Can do! Frequency graphs? A worthy challenge!
At $6,000, TWO MORE CIPHER CARDS will be added to the Keyring. These cards will feature new codes to help you solve even more puzzles.
At $7,000, TWO ALTERNATE CARDS will be added to the Keyring. These advanced cards feature alternative solving schemes to some common ciphers already included in the Keyring. With practice, these cards will be very useful to your solving needs.
At $8,000, ANOTHER TWO CIPHER CARDS will be added to the Keyring. Let’s get into some obscure encryption methods!
Finally, at $10,000, I will add ANOTHER BRAND NEW PUZZLE to the Puzzle Hunt, bringing the total up to FIVE puzzles plus a Metapuzzle!
With your support, we can make the Puzzle Keyring better and better!
Thank you so much for backing my project!
A New Guide to Puzzle Solving
Who doesn't love a good scavenger hunt? From the plastic decoder ring in A Christmas Story to invisible ink on the back of the Declaration of Independence in National Treasure, we all want to believe that the world around us is a place littered with secret information hidden in codes and ciphers.
Turns out, that's exactly the world we live in.
For years, a legion of puzzle designers have been creating a hidden language. You can find it at events like the annual MIT Mystery Hunt or at monthly Puzzled Pint competitions around the world. In mysterious creations like The Maze of Games and The Game is Afoot. Or in Alternate Reality Games like the Jejune Institute. And especially in the newest phenomenon in puzzles, escape rooms.
But how does someone who's never solved a puzzle like these before suddenly turn into the Master of all Puzzles?
Sometimes, a solver just needs a little bit of direction to get started. The Puzzle Keyring is designed to help.
The Puzzle Keyring is a deck of tarot-sized cards connected by a metal ring for convenient card flipping ability. The cards will be professionally produced by DriveThruCards with the same quality as traditional card games like Magic: the Gathering.
Each card asks questions about the puzzle at hand in an attempt to guide a solver to the perfect method of decryption. Once the correct code has been found, the solution process can be found on the back of that card.
With fifteen of the most widely used codes and ciphers, The Puzzle Keyring is designed to be the perfect guide to the world of puzzles.
A Wild Puzzle Hunt Appears!
Everyone who picks up a Puzzle Keyring will also receive an added bonus: their very own puzzle hunt. Traditionally, a hunt is a series of individual puzzles with a common theme. Each puzzle uses codes and ciphers to lead you from a set of instructions to a solution.
This beginner-friendly hunt in four parts will use The Puzzle Keyring to test your decryption skills and eventually lead to the solution of the final metapuzzle.
This Puzzle Hunt will be printed and sent out with every Keyring, along with the link to download a PDF version. The Puzzle Hunt can be solved by an individual, but since puzzles are often more fun to solve as a group, this will also contain the notes needed to turn this into a larger scavenger hunt, ideal for birthday parties or other group events.
Did someone say Deluxe?
The true Puzzle Masters do their greatest work in the strangest places. Rooftop gardens. Outside in the rain and snow. Caves beneath the city. Deep within the forest. And so, the Dancing Puzzle Masters need an even stronger product.
Those backing at the Puzzle Master level will receive an upgraded Puzzle Keyring, made from heavier cardstock for durability and a heavy laminate for greater protection against the weather. To make puzzling in the elements even easier, these laminated cards are perfect for use with dry-erase markers.
Finally, the entire Deluxe Puzzle Keyring will be bound by bamboo covers, lasercut with the Puzzle Keyring logo and individually numbered. And to keep the entire Deluxe set closed tight, a leather strap with custom puzzle piece snap will be attached to the back cover.
Why are there only 100 of these Deluxe Keyrings?
Make100 is a Kickstarter Initiative designed to inspire new creative projects during the month of January by making the rewards extremely limited in number. For me, this kind of restraint is what gave me the confidence to go ahead with the Keyring. Being able to plan exactly how much it will cost to develop and produce 100 copies removed a lot of uncertainty about the pledge process.
Thank you so much for taking a look at my project! After being a Kickstarter supporter for many years, making the leap into creation has been an exciting challenge. Your support in making this project a reality means the world to me! If you have any questions about the Puzzle Keyring, feel free to let me know.
Risks and challenges
Although I have been part of the puzzle community, as well as a regular reviewer of games on Kickstarter as part of the Going Last Tabletop Gaming Podcast, this is my first Kickstarter! Which is why I decided to ask for advice and support from some of my friends who have more experience than I do.
To ensure that the cards are built with the quality I'm looking for, I have asked my friends at Twogether Studios to help find the best materials. Keith Baker and Jenn Ellis have previously Kickstarted Phoenix: Dawn Command and Illimat, and each game has been shipped with high quality tarot-sized cards. With their assistance, I have full confidence in the final product.
For the Deluxe Puzzle Keyring, I have consulted with Christopher Badell, Founder of Greater Than Games and designer of Sentinels of the Multiverse. Christopher and I brainstormed the overall design as well as found the resources to ensure that this limited edition product is of the highest quality.
To ensure that the puzzles are created to the standards I'm looking for, I have asked some of my friends at Puzzled Pint to playtest and help with the creation process. The Puzzled Pint team has been designing puzzles for monthly events in 38 cities around the world for more than six years. With their help, I expect that we will be able to build our puzzles to be exciting and solvable by all skill levels.
Finally, the Keyring itself is already in development. As soon as we finalize our design, production will begin. The Puzzle Keyring itself will require only minor modifications after printing. And while the Deluxe Keyring is more elaborate, since this is part of the Make 100 project, I will be able to finish putting together the project and have it shipped to all one hundred backers with minimal fuss.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
