About this project
BEYOND SIGHT FILM SYNOPOSIS:
Amidst the small beautiful city of Guarapari, Brazil, Derek Rabelo’s father prayed that his son would become a famous professional surfer. His father named his son after the legendary Pipeline surfer Derek Ho, the embodiment of his dream. Unfortunately on May 25th 1992, his prayer seemed unanswered when Derek was born blind. Seventeen years later, Derek decided that despite his blindness he still wanted to surf and that he wanted to surf Pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu. Through the encouragement of his parents, best friend, and surf coach, Derek embarked on a three-year journey of grueling mental, physical and spiritual training. Join Derek as he perseveres towards his goal of surfing Pipeline and along the way inspires the best surfers in the world including Kelly Slater, Rob Machado, Laird Hamilton, Tom Curren, Damien Hobgood, Adriano de Souza, Jadson Andre, Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, Makua Rothman, Derek Ho, Lakey Peterson, Coco Ho, and the entire surfing world. You will learn from Derek’s story that the best journeys in life are walked by faith, and not by sight.
BACK STORY AND WHY WE ARE PRODUCING THE BEYOND SIGHT MOVIE:
Two weeks before Pro Surfer and Film Producer Bryan Jennings (Co-Producer of Bethany Hamilton's documentary) traveled to Brazil in May 2012, he watched a very inspirational YouTube video produced by Bruno Lemos and S4J Hawaii Productions about a blind surfer who surfed pipeline on the North Shore of Oahu. Derek Rabelo, the blind surfer from that video was scheduled to be a special guest at the Walking On Water movie screening in Rio, Brazil. The day after the event, Bryan, Derek and the other special guests from the movie night including Tom Curren, Damien Hobgood, CJ Hobgood, and Lakey Peterson all went surfing together. They were amazed at Derek’s ability to paddle out and to surf despite being blind.
They also learned how against all odds, Derek had trained for 3 years before heading to Hawaii in hopes of reaching his goal to surf one of the most dangerous waves on planet Earth. “Pipeline is basically the ultimate wave in a lot of ways — just a short, intense, dangerous wave that’s close to the beach,” said Kelly Slater, 11-time World Champion surfer. “Many surfers with sight do not venture out even after they see that others can do it.”
The short YouTube video has since been seen by over 500,000 people! Inspired by such an incredible story, Bryan knew that others would be blessed by it as well and has partnered with S4J Hawaii Productions to produce the Beyond Sight documentary about the incredible life story of Derek Rabelo.
In July 2012, Bryan brought Derek to Southern California as a special guest for the Walking On Water Surf camps and to start filming the Beyond Sight movie. To Bryan's amazement many of the most famous surfers in the world were available and willing to surf and film with Derek. These surfers included 11X world champ Kelly Slater, 3x world champ Tom Curren, Laird Hamilton, Rob Machado, Damien Hobgood, Makua Rothman, Jadson Andre, Adriano De Souza, Taj Burrow, Joel Parkinson, Lakey Peterson, and Coco Ho. These pro surfers along with the entire surfing community have been inspired by Derek's story.
While in California, Derek was already featured in the San Diego Union Tribune, as the top story on Surfer Magazine's website, and we received a phone call from Good Morning America wanting us on their show. God has truly been opening the doors for this film already!!! Walking On Water Films' previous movie titled Walking On Water was screened to over 200,000 people in live attendance and was distributed by Sony Pictures to help promote the Soul Surfer feature film.
By becoming a “Backer” on this Kickstarter Campaign you will be helping us pay for the many production expenses including filming, editing, music rights, and other costs needed to FINISH this very special and inspiring movie!
