About this project
Dear Friends and Fans,
This dream began in an unlikely place. I was driving on a dirt road on a hot summer day to help start a camp for teenagers in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. On my way there, I wrote the chorus to “I Am Somebody” and later that morning, I taught it to about 40 or so South African teens. This was their first experience with summer camp. They didn’t have much, but they had their smiles, their energy, and a zest for life even in their challenging circumstances. The camp was a way for them to have fun in a safe environment away from their daily lives. There was a young, shy teenager who became especially attached to what I was doing and saying. I could see his perplexed look as if I had come from outer space (I kinda did). I felt his curiosity, and that these words I was teaching were giving something to him that he could feel, and in his heart, deeply know. I could see his short burst of energetic smiles that clearly lit up the room. It was so endearing. When he and the others first spoke these words of the song, they all were timid, as if they didn’t have the power or courage to say such a thing as, “I Am Somebody”. But each refrain they spoke, and then sang, seemed to strengthen them, and by the end of their time at the camp, they were putting everything they had into all the songs I taught and specifically the words, “I Am Somebody”. The power of singing something positive over and over again has its surprising effects.
The following year, a colleague of mine went back to South Africa and ran into some of the teens I taught. To her surprise, kids walking on the road, as well as many more kids who passed her on the backs of trucks, started singing the chorus of “I Am Somebody” whenever they saw her. It was, and is, quite moving to see how a small part of that song has become something much deeper than I ever imagined or expected. This experience is my inspiration to complete this larger project.
Please help me complete my vision of a full-length album of empowering songs, along with the “I Am Somebody” music video and short documentary. The songs on this album are created to help anyone who wants to unleash the power of full expression in their own voice through singing. And with your generous donation, it will be a testament to the light that lives inside all of us.

I believe in the power of each person’s unique and individual voice, even when, and sometimes especially when, they do not believe in it themselves. We all have been given a powerful voice to speak and yes, to sing with too. Many of you know me as a person who brings a lot of joy to people through my singing, lifting spirits, and connecting people together through the internal expression of light I believe we all carry. I am committed to using music and singing as a way for all of us to go beyond anxiety and stress and as a way to realize our dreams.
ABOUT THE MUSIC
Writing the songs for this new album has been a complete labor of love and inspiration, from my performing and teaching in South Africa, Bali, Europe and many other places I've travelled in the world. I have written a set of songs that move and inspire people to believe in the power of their own voice. The confidence and freedom of this type of inspirational music, has led many listeners and audiences to find a greater personal joy within. This new album is a further exploration of what I created with my first solo album, “Go For The Ride” (released in 2005) with the independent label, Free Measure. The new album will be a mix of rhythm and blues, gospel, jazz, world and certainly a lot of soul from my soul. It promises to be a positive soundtrack for life that I believe you will want to listen to over and over and that repetition will have direct and positive effect on your daily attitude, much as it did for the South African teenagers. I will be joining forces with award-winning pianist/producer Tal Ariel who has been part of my musical family for the last few years as well as a team of top session musicians from San Francisco and New York City. I will be working in conjunction with Martha McCord Photography and one of her award winning Bay Area film production teams to create the music video and documentary.
Kickstarter is an all or nothing crowdfunding platform. What better way to raise money than by the support of your own wonderfully creative community. I cherish this and I believe this is a good thing. It gets us to know each other better, it creates a stronger sense of community and allows us to say yes to the ideas and people we love and believe in.
Because it is all or nothing, this means, I MUST raise my FULL goal amount! In order to receive any money pledged to this project I must meet or exceed my funding goal within the funding period. However pledges of ANY size mean I'm closer to bringing this album to life!
If you choose to back this project, choose a level from the reward list or you can enter your own amount in the box provided. I certainly and sincerely appreciate every dollar contributed here.
Risks and challenges
The projected date of completion for the project will be March 2016. There are sometimes delays in the mixing and mastering process. This could add time to the schedule. Also, sometimes I will get new music ideas and inspirations while in the recording studio and we may need to add a week or more time to the making of the album. I have allowed for these possibilities in the scheduling and hope to stay on track with my estimated release date. If there are any unforeseen delays this could possibly become June 2016. I have considered all the rewards offered carefully and do not expect problems in getting them to you around the estimated delivery date. As a backer, you are my ally. If there are any issues along the way, I will be sure to keep you updated.
