My lizard is the Lizard of Open Source
With a little over two days to go, I am lowering the stretch goal amount for an open source release to $20,000. I would like to put this within reach.
If this goal is met, I will make all of the materials used to create Lizard publicly available within one year of release.
Lizard is being made entirely with tools that are either free or open source. One of the reasons for this choice is to enable a source code release of Lizard. Since all of the tools required are free, anyone will be able to build it, modify it, and learn from it.
I've learned so much from open source software over the years, and I would like to encourage new developers by giving them an example. I would especially like to encourage new development on the NES, and this my main motivation to release the source code.
Open source software used to make Lizard:
- CC65 - compiler and assembler for MOS 6502
- Notepad++ - text editor
- FamiTracker - NES music editor
- GIMP - Image editor
- Aseprite - Animation tool
- FCEUX - NES emulator and debugger
- Nintendulator - NES emulator and debugger
- wxWidgets - GUI library
- Simpler DirectMedia Layer - Cross platform development interface
Free software used to make Lizard:
The free but not open source software is limited to development tools for the Windows and Mac platforms. There were open source options, but these two are both very much the de-facto standard for their platforms, and I think this keeps it more accessible for most developers.
There are just over two days to go on this campaign. Thanks so much to everyone who has already contributed. Stay warm this winter!
Another game you might be interested in...
Flamberge is a tactics combat RPG. Orders are given in a turn-based fashion, but unlike most tactics games, their execution all happens simultaneously. I think this kind of gameplay has a lot of potential, and I'm excited to play it. There's a playable demo too, so you can get a hands-on feel for it already.
Flamberge has just over 2 days to go, so take a look soon!
