Risks and challenges
Design Complete & Functional: The hardware has passed regulatory certifications and is ready for mass production. The certified hardware units are available in small quantities. We are creating the artwork and packaging for the Skydog router. The Skydog software has undergone multiple iterations and updates with reviews from our beta users beginning in October 2012. Our cloud service has been operational for a few years for our business solutions.
Manufacturing: We have a manufacturer in Taiwan that builds wireless access points for our business solutions, and builds routers for other vendors at the rate of multiple thousands of routers per month. We feel strongly we can handle a large initial order without encountering delays.
Supply Chain: The Skydog router shares a lot of the components and suppliers used in our existing wireless access points and business-class routers. Our core team has been working with our manufacturer for many years. We have confidence in securing the supplies and components needed to build in very large volumes.
Conclusion: We have a proven track record to deliver high-performance and reliable networking products integrated with our unique cloud-platform capabilities. We are confident that we can deliver the Skydog products on time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
For a Skydog Home Network package with no monthly fee, the anticipated market price will be at least $149 for 3 years and $179 for 5 years.
Yes. You can connect the Skydog router’s Internet port to a LAN port of your existing router and get the benefits of the Skydog application.
Yes. The Skydog router operates dual-band 802.11n concurrently at speeds of 300Mbps on the 2.4 GHz channel and at the same time 300 Mbps on the 5GHz channel. This is an N600 dual-band concurrent wireless N router with a built-in gigabit switch for all 4 LAN and 1 Internet ports.
Yes. You can monitor, receive alerts and control multiple Skydog routers from anywhere, whether you are on a Wi-Fi or 3G/4G/LTE network. You can easily switch the home network you choose to view and control from your Skydog application.
Yes. Skydog is an HTML5-based mobile application that works with any iOS, Android or Windows Phone 8 smartphone or tablet and PCs and Macs. We have tested Skydog to work on popular browsers that work with these smartphones, tablets and computers.
Yes. You can use Skydog on your smartphone, tablet or PC/Mac connected to a 3G or 4G/LTE network to manage your home network, even when you are away from home.
We use a universal power supply that is rated 100-240V and 50-60Hz.
I have a home that is greater than 3000 sq ft and I need strong Wi-Fi signals throughout. Which Skydog offer is best for me?
The Skydog Wi-Fi Range Extender Kit. That comes with one Skydog Router and two Skydog Range Extenders to wirelessly cover a home or small business up to 6000 sq ft. Setup is easy and you can reap all the benefits of the Skydog application for improved visibility and control.
When using two Skydog Routers (the Two Pack) in one house, you can physically connect the two routers in remote rooms with an Ethernet cable and use the Skydog application to view and control your home network and both routers. If you like the Skydog devices to connect wirelessly, not via the Ethernet ports, we recommend that you get the Skydog Wi-Fi Range Extender Kit.
Data from our beta testers confirm that one Skydog router would comfortably cover a house that is as big as 2500 to 3000 sq ft and that the range can go as far as 125~150 feet without a line of sight (ie, with walls and furniture in between). Various environmental conditions will affect the wireless range. Obstacles like building structure, metal, mirrors, microwave ovens, neighboring Wi-Fi signals, etc affect Wi-Fi signal strength. Placing the Skydog router closer to the middle of the house, on a clear Wi-Fi channel, raised five feet or higher above floor level, on the upper floors, and in an open area will provider better signals.
There are at a couple of ways to use Skydog with your Apple Airport Extreme or other router.
1) You can keep your Apple Airport Extreme router connected to your modem, connect a LAN port on the Apple router to the Internet/WAN port of the Skydog router. If you turn off the Wi-Fi on the Apple Airport Extreme and have all Wi-Fi devices such as your PCs, tablets, smartphones, gaming consoles, smart TVs, etc connect to Skydog, then those devices and their users can be monitored and controlled by the Skydog application. Also, all LAN devices can be monitored and controlled by Skydog. The Skydog router should run the DHCP services and provide the NAT IP address to all your client devices.
2) Alternatively, you can use the Airport Extreme as your wireless extender by switching the settings of your Apple Extreme to bridge mode. See http://gigaom.com/2010/03/03/how-to-setup-an-airport-extreme-in-bridge-mode/ for useful tips on how to set this up when you use Skydog as your primary router and Airport Extreme in bridge mode for wireless extension.
We realize that the offer is setup in a way that makes shipping fees confusing for Canadian backers. Please add your shipping fee of $15 for the single or $25 for the two-pack in your pledge amount (so minimum $114 ($99+15) or $204 ($179+25)), respectively, and enter shipping domestic ($0). We will read that pledge as shipping will be paid for with your pledge. Sorry for the inconvenience.
At PowerCloud Systems and for Skydog users we highly value and are committed to protecting our users' privacy. The highlights are: 1) any personal data captured is primarily for the use of that user for their private home network account and to provide that user with improved visibility and control of their home network, 2) we do not capture any personal or user-entered data that is transmitted between user devices and websites visited (non Skydog websites), 3) we do not share any personal information with any third party unless the user provides consent and grants us permission. Today we do not share any information to external entities. The communication between our cloud service and the Skydog application is via HTTPS (SSL secured), and we use a secure authentication scheme with a Unit ID Code (UIC) that securely registers the Skydog router(s) to a user's account.
There is a USB port on the hardware; however, it is not enabled at this time. So, we do not support any USB applications at this time. We have the port there for future possibilities.
What versions of Browsers and Operating Systems have the Skydog application been tested and verified to work with?
BROWSERs: Microsoft IE 9 & 10, Firefox (19.x), Safari (5.x & 6.x), Chrome (26.x)
PCs: Windows 7, Windows 8, Ubuntu 12.x
MACs: Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard
SMARTPHONEs & TABLETs: HTML5-based - iOS 5.x & 6.x, Android 4.1 & 4.2, Windows 8 Phone
Yes, absolutely. Skydog can address offices with up to 30 employees on location and can be used across an unlimited set of offices. The Wi-Fi Range extender allows simple expansion of coverage beyond a typical one router solution.
Skydog is unique in its ability to deliver multi-zone technology to separate and completely secure networks, for employers, employees and guest/visitor access. These zones can be easily configured with provisions for access control, bandwidth management and visibility into Internet use, BYOD and network troubleshooting. Multiple office networks for the business can be easily managed by one or a few admins from the Skydog mobile application.
