About this project
INSTRUMENTS AND SET
We're still missing some pretty large objects - a large wooden circle (our set), three large sounding boxes, a wooden table, two pairs of wooden clogs, and much more. The cost of everything we've collected so far has been fronted.
RECORDING AND PACKAGING
Recording live music is not cheap, and neither is both making and shipping DVDs.
ADDITIONAL PERFORMANCE COSTS
Instruments break. Music disappears. Things happen that we don't expect to happen.
We don't plan on doing this just once - there are plans in the works to perform Dressur as often as possible.
Dressur will be performed at the SUNY Purchase music building's Recital Hall on Wednesday, March 20, at 8pm. Directions can be provided upon request.
To us, the most important part of performing Dressur is authenticity. We're committing most of Dressur's half hour of music and blocking to memory, and we're finding instruments that match Kagel's original requests as closely as possible.
Kagel's music seeks to emphasize the ridiculousness of tradition in all formats of art. Dressur serves as an extension of his philosophy, as its purpose is to destroy the all-too-familiar mechanical and robotic reproduction of music by incorporating visual elements of acting and theatre of the absurd. However, Kagel's acting and theater directions are presented as simple commands to the performer. No theatrical knowledge or training is necessary to perform it, yet due to the simplicity of the commands, they all are very effective.
And please do remember that if we don't get to our goal, we don't get any of the money you pledge. So you should pledge more, just in case!
Risks and challenges
Our main challenge at the time is rehearsing without all of the necessary instruments. WIthout Kickstarter funding, rehearsals will remain incomplete, which could jeopardize our progress, and possibly, the performance.
If, thanks to collaborators like you, Dressur is fully funded or overfunded, we promise to deliver a product that will not disappoint. Already, we are working hard to memorize and perfect our music and theatrical actions, and we're confident that the finished performance will be entertaining and accessible to all.
You may have noticed that our rewards have an estimated arrival date of June 2013. This is due to the time it may take to film and create DVDs. The Staatstheater rewards will be posted as soon as possible after we receive your donation.
If you have any additional questions, we would be happy to answer them. Your support is vital to the growth of contemporary music, and every donation means so much to us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Staatstheater is an "opera" consisting of over 100 vignettes, which can be performed by both musicians and non-musicians alike. Most of them showcase Kagel's signature sense of humor and wit.
For every $25+ donation we receive (excluding the $35 DVD reward), we will be recording one of the many Staatstheater vignettes and posting them to both YouTube and the Updates section of the Kickstarter. They will be there for everyone's enjoyment, thanks to your donation - think of it as commissioning a public performance. These performances are extremely difficult to find anywhere - we want to make them as accessible as possible.
