There’s no one else like Kenny Smith and the 2017-2018 season is his 60th season of motor racing. We will mark this unequalled career with a Feature length Documentary telling his story.
At 75 (76 this year) Ken is showing no sign of giving up his lifetime passion for going fast. This year he will continue to race his formidable Formula 5000, in a class where he’s still arguably the fastest.
In July 2017 Ken has also been invited to the Goodwood Festival of Speed to drive an historic Formula One car, an event Ken says he’s wanted to do for years. We need your help to get there to film him at this event.
The real backbone of this documentary is the story of a guy who’s raced through 5 generations of motorsport. In the 1960s he raced with the likes of Chris Amon, Jim Clark, Bruce McLaren, Graham Hill and Jackie Stewart. Jump forward three decades Ken was winning in the 1990s in Formula Pacific/Atlantic against a new generation of racers like Greg Murphy, Paul Radisich and Craig Baird.
This year he wants to race against the next crop of young racers in the Toyota Racing Series for the NZ Grand Prix. He’s won the NZGP in 1976, 1990 and 2004 - will the organizers let him have a chance to run the NZGP in 2018?.
Through his career Ken has helped young racers and in this film we’ll discover the generosity Ken has when it comes to showing new guys the ropes. At the moment Ken is helping 15 year old Formula Ford champion Liam Lawson into Australian Formula 4 and Tom Alexander in a V8Supertourer.
This year, two past prodigies have invited Ken to ‘check out what they’re up to’ with an invitation to 24hr of LeMans by current World Endurance Champion Brendon Hartley (Porsche 919) and Indycar racer Scott Dixon (FORD GT). With your support we'll be there to film Ken at LeMans.
Risks and challenges
As a film maker I have the skills and the gear to be able to get this project made. I've worked in the industry for years and made documentaries before, including following the band Opshop over 4 years (Opshop, Secondhand Planet, TV3 Documentary). These stories take a lot of work and passion. I've got that passion and will make this project happen.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
