What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

Production Prototype

Appearance, function, and manufacturing methods match the final product.

3DCG (three-dimensional computer graphics) was first adopted by the game and film industries for production in the 1990s. Today more and more industries (ex. architectural, medical, educational) use 3DCG for a wide variety of applications. The rise of more sophisticated VR/AR technologies has further expanded the possibilities of 3DCG. However, the design methods of 3DCG are still unintuitive and complex. 

With current design methods, 3DCG work involves designing on a PC screen with a keyboard and mouse/tablet. In other words, a three-dimensional object is designed with a two-dimensional user interface. So we often need to change our viewpoint angle, adding to the complexity of workflows. Furthermore, current design methods often require you to sit at a desk with the same posture for extended periods of time, potentially resulting in serious health problems. 

Our goal is to achieve an intuitive and healthy design method with VR/AR/XR technologies.

We of MARUI-PlugIn have developed MARUI – a plugin for Autodesk Maya that allows you to create a 3D design in VR/AR. Our plugin has already helped many Maya users to increase their productivity.

Now we are contributing an XR user interface for Blender – free and open source.

3DCG(3次元コンピュータグラフィックス)は1990年代にゲームや映画業界で最初に採用され、今日、ますます多くの産業(建築、医療、教育など)で、さまざまな用途に3DCGが使用されています。VR / AR技術の進歩により、3DCGの可能性はさらに拡大し、今後、更に活用の幅は広がることが予想されます。その一方で、3DCGのデザイン方法は未だに複雑で、直感的ではありません。

現行の3DCGは、キーボードとマウスもしくはタブレットを使用してPC画面上でデザインされています。言い換えると、3次元の立体的なものを、2次元の平面上でデザインを行っているのです。そして、何度も何度も視点を変えながら完成を目指すのです。さらに、デスクワーク形式のデザイン方法では、長時間同じ姿勢で座ったままの状態が多いため、重大な健康上の問題を引き起こしています。

私たちの目標は、VR / AR / XR技術を使って、直観的かつ健康的なデザイン方法を実現することです。

私たちMARUI-PlugInは、Autodesk MayaのプラグインであるMARUIの開発に成功し、VR / AR環境での直感的な3Dデザイン方法を実現しました。私たちのプラグインは、すでに多くのMayaユーザーに使用されており、ユーザーの生産性向上に貢献しています。

そして今、私たちはBlenderのためのXRユーザーインターフェースをオープンソースで提供するべく、皆様から開発資金を頂きながら開発を行っていきます。

Risks and challenges

Blender did not have any existing VR support in its source code, because it's GPL license did not allow to use the software libraries required to use Oculus Rift or HTC Vive headsets. Therefore, we have implemented a new open source library to act as an interface between the two and avoid license conflicts.
Furthermore, while we can rely on our experience from developing MARUI, the entire Blender VR user interface needs to be implemented entirely from scratch.
