Springtime Update!!!

Posted by Brittany M. Powell (Creator)

Hello backers!

I hope this update finds you well!  It's been a stressful transition into spring for me, fueled by a no fault eviction from my San Francisco apartment of 6 years, and the final two months of completing my MFA at San Francisco State University!  Nonetheless, I found a new home I'm very pleased about, and am back on track with the my work.

I traveled to New England in February to shoot subjects in Boston, MA and Portland, MN. It was a cold and snowy time to visit, to say the least!  I met some incredible people and heard some amazing stories.  The photos from that trip are posted on the website and that puts me at 50 portraits down, and the halfway point to completion!

For now, I've put traveling on hold to complete my master's degree. Right now I am in the process of writing and installing my thesis exhibition.  The Debt Project will be a part of the annual MFA Exhibition at the gallery at SFSU, and opens Saturday, April 25th, at 1pm.  Please drop by the gallery and take a look at the excerpt from the project on display there!  A portion of the Kickstarter funds went to the framing and production costs, and I am so grateful for this!

In other news, the project got some press in the form of SFSU's website, seen here: and was apparently published in China's Vision magazine's March Issue (I haven't seen it yet), so that's exciting!  I am also pleased to report I was awarded a Fellowship from the Vermont Studio Center for an artist residency in June.  I am definitely looking forward to having the opportunity to work more on both the shooting portion of the Debt Project, as well as writing and editing sound, free from distractions in such a beautiful environment.

As far as rewards go, I sent out the first round in January to people who selected commercial prints (with the exception of two I need to hand deliver).  If you didn't fill out the survey, or didn't recieve your print, then please contact me directly.  For those of you who chose portraits from the project as your reward, I'll be sending out a survey shortly. You can make your selection now, or wait until the project is finished to do so.  Lastly, those of you who selected portrait sessions or surf lessons, I'll be getting in touch directly to schedule in the coming months.  Feel free to reach out to me directly as well:

Thanks again to everyone.  I look forward to continuing on the down path this project has taken me on, and I couldn't have done it without you!

"a no fault eviction" - how ironic is that displacement...? considering that your photographic journey is about debt....anyway, fair play for pressing on amid unfavourable
