About this project
Blast Brawl 2 is a fast-paced, action packed 2D fighting game where you die in a single hit!
If that sounds scary, it's because you haven't tried it yet! Simple and accessible controls give way to a dynamic combat system where skill reigns supreme - adaptability, creativity, and quick reflexes will result in victory, even against impossible odds.
The story follows a band of epic heroes, all trapped in a strange and deadly world. You can play as any of them - each possesses unique abilities and techniques that make them radically different. Combat is a deadly dance, a constant whirl of fire, steel, and blood.
Gameplay is a refreshing mix of concepts, think Super Smash Bros. meets Samurai Gunn with a touch of Metroidvania. Delve into the secrets of an exciting new world, filled with vicious enemies and unexpected allies!
I've been working on Blast Brawl 2 in my free time for over 2 years now. It's come a long way, and is a blast (heh) to play! You can check it out for yourself, there's a demo! Go on, give it a try! Here are some links (both hosted on IndieDB):
The demo features FIVE playable characters, and the option to battle your friends or fight against endless hordes of enemies in Wave Mode.
Note: If you have any problems with the demo, please just leave a comment and let me know the problem! I'll fix it as quickly as I can.
Blast Brawl 2 is extremely simple to learn, but difficult to master. Each character is relatively straightforward, and possesses 4 different abilities:
- Attack: A reliable move for killing opponents! Could be as simple as a sword slice, or aiming and firing a gun.
- Defense: Blocks, deflects, or negates attacks that would kill the character! The Sniper does a roundhouse kick that knocks bullets or attacks away.
- Mobility: Helps the character move more quickly, or dodges an attack! The Vanguard runs more quickly, but drops his shield and can be attacked from the front!
- Special: A move completely unique to the character in question! The Ninja becomes totally invisible for several seconds (though his footsteps can still be seen), while the Pirate throws a bottle of grog that scrambles the controls of enemies.
After choosing your character, you are set free amidst a randomly generated world where you must use your skills, reflexes, and creativity to bypass deadly challenges! On your epic journey, you will battle against:
- Swarms of Enemies: Each environment that you enter has different inhabitants - most thirsting for your blood.
- Sinister Traps: Not just creatures and fiends bar your path - beware the levels themselves!
- Hidden Secrets: Not everything is as it seems! As you explore, you might find that activating something opens up entire new paths elsewhere... and there may be potential allies just out of sight.
- Outrageously Awesome Bosses: After surviving each deadly gauntlet, you may find a final, greater challenge...
And if it's too difficult? Just ask a friend to help you out!
Blast Brawl 2 follows the principle that more butts on the couch = more people who should be playing the game! That's why, if you just plug in another controller, you can have another player! 4 players? Sure! 8 players or even MORE? WHY NOT???
Yet the extra help will not trivialize the game - as more heroes join the fray, enemies become more numerous and traps more common. Still, it's always better to face danger with friends at your side!
Plus, you can even fight your friends in deathmatch and other versus modes, and there may even be unlockable co-op challenges...
All that's well and good, but what about the individual characters? They're the real meat of the game! If you happened to be looking for details on them, well by golly you've come to the right place!
The two "main" protagonists - and the characters who will be playable from the very start of the game - are the heroic duo, Jack Flash and Jill Thunder.
I won't go into detail about their abilities and techniques, but I will shed some more light on a few of their potential allies! (Story details will still be secret, however.)
The Ninja is a master in quick and aggressive attacks from the shadows, striking suddenly from an unexpected angle, cleaving foes in twain and vanishing again before his opponents are able to react.
Between his power to turn invisible, his excellent dodging skills, and his ability to cling to walls, the Ninja is unmatched at the deadly art of ambush.
The Sniper is a skilled markswoman able to mow down her enemies from a distance. By shooting a deadly volley of blazing bolts, she can hold her own in any situation despite the lack of a melee attack.
Though she must remain in place while aiming her weapon, approach her with caution - her ability to plant explosive mines coupled with her quick reflexes make her a dangerous target.
The Vanguard is a bulky, physical powerhouse whose giant shield will block almost any attack. Foes must take care to strike from unguarded angles, lest the Vanguard block their blow and return one of his own.
In addition to his nigh-indestructible shield, the Vanguard's massive bulk can crush enemies against floors, walls, ceilings - allowing this brute to corner you is most likely the last thing you will ever do.
Yet all his power comes at the expense of speed - playing the Vanguard well requires you to plan ahead and avoid getting flanked, and make sure your shield is always up when a blow is incoming...
The Pirate is no stranger to melee combat, but he doesn't particularly excel at it - instead, his strength lies in misdirection, evasion, and exploiting his enemies after throwing them into disarray.
By throwing bottles of grog that confuse opponents and attacking them before they recover, the Pirate can take down opponents with abilities that far surpass his own.
Plus, with aid from his faithful Parrot he can FLY!
Blast Brawl 2 features music from over 40 different artists, showcasing some of the best talent in the Synthwave and Darkwave genres.
Sounds like a lot of music? It is! There's a [expletive] ton of music in this game! Well over 10 HOURS. And it's all awesome!
Here, have a taste!
Blast Brawl 2 actually features in-game radio! As you play through the various areas of the game, you'll hear a continual stream of hand-picked music. Each separate region of the world has its own unique radio channel with a completely unique track list - explore everything to unlock them all!
Blast Brawl 2 is pretty far in development. I've spent a lot of my free time making the game as awesome as I could over these last couple of years. Currently, the game is a pretty straightforward local-multiplayer title similar to Samurai Gunn or Towerfall.
But I want to make it more than that. The actual vision for the game is something bigger and better than another arena fighter - imagine Spelunky meets Dark Souls, with a couple of twists all its own.
However, to make Blast Brawl 2 as good of a game as it could be, and to give it the depth, content, and overall awesomeness that I know it could have, I need to be able to fund some dedicated development time. There are just not enough hours in the day otherwise.
Additionally, Blast Brawl 2 has already been approved for Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, but there are certain associated console development costs that I cannot cover myself. I would like to be able to simultaneously launch on all platforms, but can't do so without some extra funding.
Add to all this that I'm trying to stay indie, and keep the game as close to my vision as possible.
Ultimately, it's only with your help that all this can happen. Kickstarter is a wonderful tool to help projects become reality, and I'm so excited to make that happen with you!
Games are very expensive (or at least take a very long time) to make! And even if you back me, and we manage to make this happen, not having a good plan on how to spend the money won't get us very far.
Thankfully, I am a man with a plan. Here's a general breakdown of why the funds are needed:
- General Development: That's me eating, sleeping, and living with a roof over my head for several months, all while dedicating my days and nights to making this game a reality.
- Console Development Costs: Blast Brawl 2 has been approved for Xbox One and PS4 in addition to Steam! Woohoo! But to make those console releases possible, I have various costs (mainly hardware releated) that I need to take care of.
- Marketing/Promotion: Once the game is done, I'll need to spend some money promoting it! Otherwise no one will know about it.
- Kickstarter takes certain fees, and there are general taxes to consider. Plus, fulfilling certain backer rewards will have various costs (creating the physical items, shipping, etc).
Want to back me? (Holy crap yay!) Here are some of the things you can get!
My undying gratitude! Your name will appear in the game's credits as a backer! A stunning digital wallpaper/poster pack! Oh, and you'll be notified of all the fancy updates I post here!

All of the above, plus you'll get turned into art by yours truly! Send in a picture, and I’ll turn you into a character with the same art style as the rest of the game - you’ll get your new avatar back, and it will also appear in the game’s credits! You might also find your corpse in the game somewhere...
Everything in the previous backer packages, AND a physical copy of the Brawler's Handbook?!?! Shocking! (Add $20 for international shipping)
Get a cute and adorable plushie of a Blast Brawl 2 character, as well as everything above! (Add $20 for international shipping)
Everything in the previous tiers AND your avatar will be animated, and appear somewhere in the game as an interactable NPC! But where???
You, my beautiful friend, will be given all of the above. In addition, while I'm working on the game, I'll work together with you to design a cool monster or enemy that will appear in the game!
The funding goal is my estimated bare-minimum to get the game in good shape for an Early Access release. With extra funds, so too come extra features and goals!
As my funds increase, I can put that many more characters, enemies, levels, and bosses into Blast Brawl 2. However, I can also focus on achieving more specific features I've always wanted to add:
Risks and challenges
Look: I'm a solo developer doing all of the art, coding, and SFX myself. This is also a larger project than anything I have attempted before, so there's that. I'm pleased with the results so far, but I have a LOT of work ahead of me.
That said, I'm positive I can deliver the game that I am desperately trying to make. I've already gotten a huge chunk of the core game together, check it out in the demo! (I've been pushing the demo pretty hard, and that's for a reason - I feel it's pretty great!)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
